should be a ? after mistake...
Adjusted the valves and changed the oil last night. I prefer a 100% syn. oil and that rules out the Brad Penn oil that is usually recommended in this forum (My car gets HOT on track days but that's another discussion). All the auto stores in my area (DC) have this stuff on the shelf, TB Zinc Plus. So I added a bottle to increase the zinc content of my oil. Anyone know of a down side to doing this? I used "slick 50" many years ago in a lawn mower and a Nissan 240 SX and both died of oil failure i am confident was from the slick 50. So I obviously don't want this to happen to my 911. You prefer a 100% syn - but you take a 100% syn oil and add this?
as opposed to Brad Penn that's a semi syn? I'd rather know what I was dealing with than a mixture.

I hear you Jeremy, but I don't want a semi syn oil. I used Mobil 1 motorcycle oil last time. Apparently is has lots of zinc and is designed for an air cooled engine The stuff is really expensive but more importantly, was not available at the two stores I tried (Advanced auto)
So, what's the alternative? Chris, 73 911 E |

I used Royal Purple motorcycle oil for awhile it was $$ - then used mobil one with GM EOS - but I was always worried about the mixture - then I switched to Brad Penn. My car is quieter - and runs cooler both at the track and in traffic.

Before my car had a fender mounted cooler it ran Hot Hot on the track and new, 100% syn. oil made a difference in temps and oil pressure. It has a cooler now but it still gets north of 250 on hot track days so, based upon my direct experience, I will only run a 100% syn. I posted a question on the Lucus site. Will post their answer. They should know, right?

The Lucus product is news to me.
I've used COMP Cams in last oil change, mine came in a tube though. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-159/ Quote:

a whole bottle is way more than you need. i would think that even 1/4 bottle would be more zinc than the old oils had.

It says to add a bottle for a regular engine that uses 4-5 qts. I added a bottle in my engine that uses 12 gts. I felt I was erroring on the conservative side.

i put a whole bottle of comp cams juice in my 911 and the oil looked like mud afterward. my oil didn't look like mud using the old style oil with pre-EPA additives. so i have to conclude that one bottle was overkill. if you google around on this subject, plenty of folks agree.

Good to know. I also checked the Valoline web site as this is what I used (20 /50). They claim to have 4 times the wear protection over Mobil one on a similar valve train to our older P cars and mentions zinc. So, maybe I did not need it.
