Dumb Turbo question...but i am new to 911's

Well a 911 has been my dream car since i remember..I was wondering on information about turbo charging a '83 Carrera Targa...I think its a 3.0...I havent bought it yet...Anyways I am dissapointed that it only runs 180 Horsepower. I was wondering if it is easy to turbo charge the car? how much does it cost? Is it safe for a freshly rebuilt engine? How much would it boost my Horsepower? And what else do i need to know.
Or is it better to supercharge etc.

Thanks,
Rafal

Rafal,

Have you thought about backdating the exhaust with SSI heat exchangers and a sport muffler? This would get you up to around 200-205hp and even out the torque delivery. I think there are a few people on this board who have tried the turbo upgrade. I would, however, keep in mind that this engine was not designed for turbocharging and there are significant design differences between your engine and that used in 930 turbos to allow for it to withstand the pressures (and heat!) of the turbo. Im sure that turbocharging your engine can be accomplished, but at a price of significantly decreased life as well as a high risk of acute problems as well.

Just my $0.02. But its your car man, do whatever makes you happy!!!!

Best of Luck.
Nick.

You haven't bought the car yet but you're already modifying it? You're as bad as I am. I don't know of anyone that makes a turbo kit for the CIS cars. SOK makes a couple of supercharger kits, but for the price added you would be better served buying a 930 to start with.
