What evaporator/blower is this?

Should I keep it or replace with stock? Looks like a real hack-job.

There is also an under-dash unit installed that's not hooked up to anything at the moment. Is this part of the unit?

Wilson,

I guess it depends on whether the present system works, how well is works, and whether the "hack" job offends you. If you were to go back to stock then you would want to do an upgrade because as you probably already know the stock system won't cut it. Once you decide to upgrade then you have decide on the system and how much money you want to spend. Remember that our hosts carries most of these up grades.

I would suggest spending a lot of time searching and reading what has already been posted on this site. The subject has been well documented, you just need to dig it up.

You can do a search here and find out everything you wanted to know. Here's one that I'm partial to: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_ac_1984/911_ac_1984.htm

The system worked fine until recently. I imagine there is a leak somewhere. I'm about to tackle some of the upgrades I've read about here (barrier hoses, etc.), but I don't want to re-invent the wheel, either. I have a new(er) style compressor and two condensers (engine lid & rear fenderwell).

I guess my question is will a stock evaporator be superior to the one pictured? I cannot close the smuggler's box hatch due to this set-up. Not sure if that affects anything.

P.S. - Just read the article in the link. Great info, thanks!

Wilson,

No one would know that until you had both systems up and running and ran a comparison test. However I personally I couldn't live with the set up no matter how well it worked. So if you're doing an upgrade on the rest of the system why not change out the evaporator and the evaporator motor? The after market evaporators and new blower motors really are a mark improvement to the original system.

At the same time you'll be increasing the resale value of your car by putting it back to stock equipment. BTW, I've been told that the under dash air distribution grill that you have is very good.

You look to have a typical dealer installed set up that has been hacked in. In a correct installation, the rubber hoses enter the smuggler's box through holes in the sidewall of the box. The flex duct at the top is not there, rather the outlet of the fan faces the bulkhead that enters the passenger compartment, just above and to the right of the gas pedal and a plastic duct with a collar connects the fan outlet to the interior where it connects to the diffuser piece that you have showing in your last picture (the one that is not hooked up.) It wouldn't take much, IMO, to correct the installation if you want to keep it. The parts you need can often be found on the for sale board as many of these systems have been removed or upgraded. Someone will probably post a picture of a correctly installed unit in the smuggler's box and you will see that if done correctly, it is unseen from the trunk area.

This thread has a photo of a stock evaporator installed in the smugglers box. The foil insulation is an aftermarket upgrade, but it's just wrapped around the the evaporator housing. Tou can see the lid will close properly.

What you have there is pretty ugly. As Ossiblue said, post a WTB in the classified and you should be able to find the proper parts.

My 73 has the dealer installed A/C and is almost identical to yours but i don't have that funky hose on top. Mine goes out thru the smugglers box and under the dash. It looks like someone added that. I have a sanyo compressor and run r12 and it cools fine but if it fails I am going with a new Kuehl systems setup. I think there pieces are a notch above the rest out there.
