My guess is $8,500... I know it's worth more but you seem really happy about the price so that's my final answer.... Do I get a prize if I'm the nearest guess??
The car looks like it's in great shape!!! Keep us posted!!

Thats a pretty good price. I just purchased a 78 SC with 100,000 mi, no heater motor, no ac compressor, new interior, new paint, turbo tail and the same wheels (not chrome though) for about $8,000 and my Passat (paid $1000 from my grandpa) BUT I just found out it leaks like a 80 year old womans bladder (lol, that was horrible).
To answer the question on the tires and the tensioner update. I do believe that the tires are 7" and 8" (if they are 16" rims) and the tensioner can be identified by supply hoses that lead to the tensioner covers. If you could email me at roseneck@cyberbeach.net I have a quick favor to ask of you. Thanks in advance.
Enjoy the car, they are a real blast (watch out for the rear weight bias!!!)

Blackfoot,

I don't see a problem with the color ... pastels are nice ... give it a chance to 'grow' on you! A good paint job is expensive, and a great one to change the color is VERY EXPENSIVE!

Those Fuchs look like 6" & 7", and AREN'T CHROME!!! They are either polished or natural, anodized aluminum!!! And, they look just right on the car!

The cam chain covers will have very tiny 2 mm oil supply lines in the middle going into 'Banjo Bolts' ... if you have pressure-fed tensioners .

Adam,

What rear-weight bias?!

Blackfoot,

The weight distribution of a 911 is not as bad as it looks on paper. In fact, because the engine is behind the rear axle, it cleverly acts like a traction control device, and, due to the transfer of weight under hard breaking, the bias from the rear gives 911's superb brake balance.

You hear many stories about the tendency of 911’s to act like a pendulum. In theory, yes, you can perhaps see how it could, but in practice, well, it's apocryphal; even wet conditions fail to expose dire consequences to Porsche's decision to push the engine a little further back than theoretically ideal to accommodate two kiddy seats.

In my humble opinion, and after driving my 911 in the most extreme of conditions, i.e., several club sprint events, one of them damp, I can safely say that the 911 exhibits more mid-engine characteristics than anyone outside of Weissach, and anyone who has never raced a 911 could fully comprehend.

After seeing the smog pump - I had to check and see if Blackfoot is from California. He is. I've got the same pump and also am from Ca. I've been told the pump doesn't eat up much in the h.p. area so I've left mine on. But I must agree, the engine compartment looks much cleaner without the pump. After only paying $8500. you can still do a 4k paint job and get your money back out.

Congratulations! Nice car. Be sure and post it in the Gallery. Good job on the price, too. I wouldn't worry about the color, either. I quit caring about colors and OD readings a long time ago. It's all about the previous care.

Since you seem like a nice guy, I'll give you $200 for those nasty chrome wheels. Please let me know ASAP.

actually, i was saying "got it" as in okay, i have your estimate. i paid $7250! i think i got a very good deal. this car is no beater. no concours item, but it seems fairly solid.

okay, that's good to know warren, 6's & 7's. aubrey, send me that check! seriously, i know i can put 7's & 8's on it, but what about 8's & 9's?

atr, even with the leaks your car still sounds like a good deal.

matt, thanks for the words of encouragement. i've never owned a car with so much weight bias, front or rear. but now it doesn't really worry me.

yeah n11, the pump is legally needed as i'm in calif (san jose). i guess i could take it off as the car was just smogged. how would the car run if it was off? wouldn't it idle rough?hey, i've heard of the h4 and h5 headlights. is h4 good or is it stock?

H4s are usually the europen version and are considered an uprade (bout 120 each new). AS for the rear weight bias.. lol.. I leaned to not take your foot off the gas until you were clear of the turn... I smucked my 4 day old 78 911 into a guard rail. Damn near cried for 3 days!!! Can't wait to learn to drive it properly!

H4s are not stock on your car but they are very good. They are the ones you want. That saved you about $250 on the upgrade. I just have to say something about the weight bias. Do you have any idea how much front bias a front wheel drive car has? It's far more than a 911s rear bias, I assure you.

HEY BLACKFOOT!

I've been looking for a good 911 for over a year now. I too am in California and was wondering where you looked for, and found this one? Was it advertised that low or did you talk them down? I've looked high and low and can't seem to find such a deal! I'd take it in that color too if I found one for that price!

dv, i had been looking for a 911 or 951 for about 2 months. around the holidays it's very slow, not many cars being sold. take heart, it will pick up in the spring for sure, and maybe you'll get lucky as i did and find one before then. are you in la area?

i looked regularly in yahoo classified, autotrader, recycler.com, and of course in my local newspapers. the po was asking only $8000. he had lots of calls 2 days into the add running in the paper but only one guy before me saw it.

Oh yeah, the bias on a front engine vehicle is even more so however most people learnt how to drive front engine vehicles whereas anyone who purchases a rear engine car has to relearn to drive it. It is a completely different driving experience (one that I enjoy completely). I was simply making him aware of my experience with that same model. Then again, i'm only 19 and probably pushed it a little too far too fast.

Gettin' thrashed on this bias thing, lol

Nice car. Keep the color, it's unique and being an originality hound I like it.

As for 8's and 9's by 16" it will be a tight fit. The wheels may rub and you will have to roll the fenders (see other thread). Plus the real 9's are *very* expensive. Better to stick with 7's and 8's if you want a painless upgrade. In fact, you can move your 7's to the front and just get a set of 8's. Even 8's are not cheap in the correct offset. Make sure you do not get 944 turbo offset 8's.

Blackfoot:

I won't tell you what I paid for my '78 SC Targa, but it took a year to get the price!!

My car came with the tensioner update, newer bowler hat anti-cav. oil pickup, Carrera exhaust valve covers, and other bits. Many track passes and pit check receipts as well.

Did you get full receipts on this one? Here's a quick list of my first two weeks of ownership: changed oil/filter, gas filter, ran two Techron runs and dumped oil, put a bottle of water diminisher in the tank as well (not at the same time as the Techron), and replaced rotor to spark plugs. Checked timing and removed air pump and catalytic converter.

Now I've done the valves and a pedal 'box to trans helper spring replacement. I cannot tell you how AMAZING the clutch pedal feels. If your clutch pedal squeaks at all, mail me and I'll detail the fixes.

Jw
