Is This A Good Deal??????????????
Well, I was wondering if a 1984 Porsche Targa Carrera with 117,000 miles on it in good/great condition with a freshly rebuilt engine, Whale tail, its gold with black leather interior, fuchs, for $12,000 I am also planning on talking him down to $10,500 or $11,000...He is my mechanic and he sold me my 85.5 944 for a great price....What do you think?

Man, That really looks like a great price !!
You usually don't see 84's going that low for one in good shape. If he wasn't your mechanic I'd have to question the price. The 911 isw quite a different car than your 944,have you driven the 911 yet? |

I have never drove a 911, All i know is that the 944 has better handling..but i have heard that a 911 is in a class of its own....can you tell me some things about a 911...like how it feels to drive? Can you also compare it to a 944?

Rafal,
The determination of what is better, or best handling is highly subjective, and I question whether any 944 ever had test numbers better than 911s. The 911s in the 2200 lb weight class were capable of 0.912 g cornering levels as early as 1972, and with very skinny tires, namely 185/70VR-15 in front, and 215/60VR-15 in the rear. The lightest 944 ever produced weighed over 2768 lb, and none of the 911s made prior to 1990 weighed that much! The best description of 911 handling is what I would call Go-Kart-like! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Rafal, that's a price almost too good to be true. An '84 with that kind of mileage in good shape is worth at least $16,000.
I would have a different mechanic look it over and perform a leakdown test. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 The Porsche Owners Gallery |

A respected local SCCA instructor and perennial regional champ was very impressed by a 944 turbo recently. Bill said the student should not have been able to make it around the track. The car took the day. Strong acceleration.
Impressive as that is, you don't want to get into a debate about acceleration 911 v 944. the turbo 911 is the legendary 930. Nuf said. But the 911 is just a very unique car. The sound is more enticing than the Sirens' Song. The smell. Yes, they have a fragrance. And the handling is decidedly go-cart in a sense. But the tail is much more heavy. These cars can pull away from ANYBODY during a turn exit. They can also be unforgiving. The boxer six is a masterpiece of automotive engineering. It is the 'best' feeling power I have experienced. But I'm afraid that most of us were just bewitched by this machine, and many unfortunate souls are not touched by this magic. I've known since I was ten. Anyway, back to the subject: That seems like just a KILLER deal. Have it checked out ------------------ '83 SC |

I agree with Warren about go-kart like handling. But, this also means a short wheelbase and low polar moment. (I like low polar moments, but that's for a different BBS...)
a 911 is what a 944 becomes after it molts. |
