can i delete this assy?
while fixing a head gasket leak, this turned into a minor "while your in there" job ( cams, valve job and about 3k of other stuff), getting ready to assemble and i was wondering since i have the 75 w/hand throttle, can I scrap the aar and hose assembly? i dont see why not but thought i would ask you guys first, thanks, donhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1245167489.jpg

if its a 82 CIS 3.0 then yes you need that AAR valve. it would be cool if you could hook up the throttle to the AAR valve and control it (open and close) with your hand like a choke.
where were you planning to connect your hand throttle to? |
I don't know what/how the 75 hand throttle was hooked up, but I do know that in mine ('75 with a '79 motor) the hand throttle isn't hooked up at all. (Does nothing when I pull it... took some research to figure out what it was for and why it didn't work).
If you could get the '75 assembly that the hand throttle hookups to then I don't see why you couldn't, but as long as the AAR is working, it seems easier to me than having to open the hand throttle to start. |
james, 75 has a hand throttle from the factory
|
cool, wish l had one, still need the AAR valve, not so much the decelleraition valve
|
AFAIK, the aar replaced the hand throttle, they basically do the same thing., Just trying to clean things up a bit, and not have to worry about vacuum leaks, or buying a new aar valve. $$$ This one works perfectly and if all goes well will be for sale pretty cheap.
|
you can delete it. my 77 930 had both a hand throttle and aux air valve, along with the decel crap. i yanked it all and just use the hand throttle.
|
thank you John, now i feel way better.

The confusion never ends... look at this picture;
http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1978-83/1-7-3.JPG You can delete #49 (AAR) because it only supplies a liitle extra air at startup. When the engine is running is closed and does nothing. There is an endless debate about the decel valve #15. It keeps the engine rpm up for a moment after you take your foot off the throttle. If it's working you might notice that your rpm drops to 1500 or so and then settles to 1000 rpm. Some people hate that. You need the AAV, #46, to give added air during warmup. This makes your engine idle at 1500 to 2000 rpm till it warms up. A hand throttle will allow you to do this. |
Where can I get a hand throttle for my SC??
|
why would you need on the the tbiz kit, and by the way, how is that working for you?
|
The Bitz kit (by default) doesn't have an idle-air controller (IAC). The MS EFI supports it but if you have a working AAR then you don't need the IAC for warm-up as the AAR handles that portion.
If you AAR is broken (or removed I guess), you could add an IAC. It also wouldn't be a bad thing if you have AC as the IAC can offset the power drain at idle. Don - How do you hook up the hand throttle to the later CIS engines? My 75 has the handle, but as I said earlier, it isn't connected. Not that I need to hook mine up, AAR seems to work fine, but if it ever dies that seems cheaper than replacing the AAR. |
chris, there is a goofy little plastic clip that is broken under your e/brake assy. i think you can still get it but its a pain to put in
|
pelican has 2 no, 1 left. as you know, after that one is gone, who knows if you can ever get one again
|
Sometimes you might get lucky and it only slipped off the throttle rod or the set screw on the throttle rod collar came loose and that is sliding around.. Most of the time the palstic piece is broken.
It is easier to assemble the plastic pusher to the hand throttle arm on the workbench and then slip it up from the bottom of the handbrake assy plate. To do this I had to elongate the slot in the plate about 1/4" with a dremmel. |
Hladun, and others,
The AAV helps starting by giving the engine that gulp of air . The AAR keeps the revs up during warmup. |

+1 to what John Walker said...
With an operable hand throttle, you don't NEED the AAR, AAV, or the Decel valve. The 73 and 74, and some '75, did just fine without the AAR and AAV, but did have a decel valve, which some folks still remove. The accelerator linkage operates the throttle butterfly, and the hand throttle operates the accelerator linkage (if all the hand throttle parts are still present after all these years). The AAR,AAV, and Decel valves all three are just another path for air to flow around the throttle butterfly, so in the end, the accelerator can perform all the same functions. If one understands this, and is willing to manipulate the accelerator to accommodate these needs particularly during warm-up, the items in question can be eliminated. |
Question for those who have removed these items. How did you plug the other ends? I plan on removing these items from my 78 SC motor in my 73 w/ hand throttle.
