Advice on this 911...
Hey guys. Just sold my 914 and thinking of getting a 911. This one is close to me and I'm thinking about looking at it. I know nothing at all about these cars. Looking for some advice on what to look for, if this price seems ok, etc. Also, on a 914 flares and similar mods are usually a good thing, what about on these cars?
Here's the ad, let me know your thoughts. 1968 Porsche 911 color is very bright yellow with black interior, 88,000 miles, 2.0 liter engine, new clutch, dual triple throat Weber carbs,Recaro seats, all steel flares and boxed rockers.4 speed sportomatic transmission, Borbet wheels (matched to car) with Dunlop tires. I just do not drive this car and have not had time to finish restoring the car 100%. I have only driven the car 560 miles since the major restoration in 1994 and only drove car 1 time last year and twice this year to car shows so I have decided to let it go to someone who would enjoy the car. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

onboost is right... this is a 1968??? Not that I can tell! The body is heavily modified, the lenses are all wrong for a euro car, the grills are painted, the rear lens should not be there, the tail is added, the vents on the front of the rear fenders are added, the rims are not right, the mirrors are wrong, looks like seats, door panels are wrong, front valance is wrong...
Run as fast and far as you can away from this abomination! It is a crime what someone did to that car!

For some reason making the older cars look newer was the "thing" to do for many back in the 80's and early 90's. Now everyone is "backdating" their newer rubber bumper cars to look like the pre 73 versions. The fact this one hasn't been driven is a big problem, sitting is not good despite what many who advertise low miles would like you to believe. The body modifications, color, etc. are terrible looking to my eye. The sportomatic can be ok if well maintained but they hurt resale later. Like others have said, unless you can get this for significantly below what a decent 68 would be and want a project I'd keep looking.
Decide what you want first. An older "longhood" an SC, a pre 89 Carrera, etc. to focus your search. All have their pluses and minuses. Good luck.

Have a glance through this 'Buyers Guide' posted on this website's main page.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/technical_specs/911_guthrie_faq.htm Also make sure before you buy something within your planned budget, plan on setting aside a few hundred dollars for a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) which will confirm your find or confirm it needs a lot of work and give some negotiating strength if you are up to repairing what has been found. There are a LOT of very good cars out there now for cheap, due to the economy, so do some homework, find out what year range you can afford and start looking at cars, asking questions and learning. It will be fun and interesting.

you can see it's a swb just by the way the rear wheels don't fit the opening.
awful.

let's define the 'right price'.....
Market value of a swb (non S?) covered in surface rust w/ great big cut outs where the stock flares belong and a partially missing interior and no wheels and ruined/missing trim and interior. So.........what's that number?

oh and missing front fenders.
the sad truth is that vs. a driver quality correct swb this car is worth NEGATIVE dollars. you cannot bring it to the value of a driver quality correct swb for the same or less than the value of same.

Well, that is a little strong.
Many could be very happy by bringing it to a driver quality NOT correct swb... a rat rod but w/o all the blingboyz crap. There is also a market for all the junk hung on the car, so an industrious person could sell that off. Still, the car has been "ruined" and de-ruining it will take a lot of effort. |

Only driven 560 miles within 15 years scares me along with the body mods.

The car has some serious potential towards a ST project car. I'd guess it will sell for 10K and need another 5. So, you get what you wanted on paper w/o having to start from scratch. No for everyone, that's for sure. This is the kind of stuff I buy when I'm shopping. I'll sell off anything I can to reduce the investment and begin form there. |

DId you know the Sportomatic is an automatic?
Depends what you want to do as said above, if you could get it real cheap and covert it to look like an RSR it would be a cool color! But it would need a different motor, wheels, tranny and the boxed rocker stuff has to go. Its definitely a big project

you know the kiss of death on that car....well there are many i guess but the biggest one is the flare vent thingys. definitely not doing an rsr look unless you do some welding/painting.
