Cam part # help please
 
Well I bought a set of supposedly S
cams from guy on the Rennlist and they arrived today.

The fella said I could return them no
problem if I am not satified. The
part numbers do not match my 72-3 Spec
book and so I do not know what they
are. The Stoddards part # lookup did
not help either.
The numbers are:
901 105 110 1R
901 105 185 0R this one has the MFI gear mount end.
What are these cams and how can I tell
if they are machined for S cam profiles?
Thanks in advance Warren or anybody else.
The build dates are different as well but
that is no big deal.
24-11-70 and
27-1-71 and there
is a AE-1 stamped on both of them.

Bill,

Sorry to have to say this, but those casting numbers don't translate directly to a cam part number. That is true of all of the casting numbers ... blocks, cams, transmission cases, etc.

The only way to get an idea of whether those cams are 'S' spec or not is to set them between two 'V' blacks and measure the lobe lift on both intake and exhaust lobes ... then we will have an idea. The specs are in Bruce Anderson's Porsche 911 Performance Handbook.

Thanks Warren. I took the "new" cams to
my two favorite garages in Denver
today. There is a mark on true factory S
cams on the right cam end. An S
will be stamped there. My right cam had
that mark. The lobes looked good according
to both garages too (Storz and Eisenbuds)
so I am happy. Apparently an experienced
wrench can look at 911 cams and tell
what they are by size of the lobes. But
having that S there was good thing too.
I will check the lift specs once I put the
engine together next month. Also the
cam grinder shops do mark the cams with
their grinds as well. Having real
factory S cams secured for my engine
made my day.
