My tach on a 84 911 seems to be eratic sometimes, others just fine. Any ideas where to look? maybe clean all the connedtions?

That engine has points, right? What is their condition? I'd try a brand new set just purchased.

No points in an '84.

If the tach is bouncing all over the place check your alternator output (multimeter on the battery terminals), if the output exceeds 14.5-15 volts (13.2-14.2 is considered normal) you probably have a bad voltage regulator. High alternator output will cause a bouncing tach (and other problems, not the least of which is cooking the battery).

If your tach just drops to zero occasionally (like mine) there's probably some interference in the signal to the tach from the CD unit (partially broken or abraded wire, intermittent connector, etc.). Start by checking/cleaning the connections at each end (I've still got to check the tach connections on mine).
