Window trim install

I just finished painting my 84 Carrera and am in the process of installing the glass. I have all new OEM rubber from pelican and have attempted to put one of the quarter glass windows in, but the metal window trim is killing me. I have installed a lot of early VW rubber with trim, but I cannot seem to get this trim in. I have the rubber on the glass, and have tried windex for a lube, but it will not go in. The glass is the last thing I need to do, I could drive it if it was in, I am about to install it without the trim. Please help! Frustrated!

You have to assemble the window with trim prior to installing it in the car.

That worked out fine for me.

Be sure not to lube to rubber/trim because it will come out when you try to install the window.

Just finished install all the glass last weedend., rear Qtr. windows were actually the easiest to install aprox. 15 min.

Put the rubber on the glass, with the glass on a flat surface lay the trim on top of the rubber. Carefully shape the trim untill it lays as flat as possible against the contour of the rubber. Spray WD40 on the groove in the rubber. Align your trim and start the trim into the groove while rolling the outside edge of the rubber away from the trim, this will help open the grove, as you roll the rubber push the trim into the groove. An invaluable tool to have here is a couple IRWIN Grip Clamps they will help in seating the rubber into the groove. Once you have the trim in clean the WD40 off the surface with Final Clean.
Installind the glass is easy if you pay attention to a couple of key points.
Start by installing 16 or18 Ga. electrial wire into the weatherstrip groove, the groove is shallow and anything larger than 16-18 Ga. wire is difficult to pull correctly. Let the pull wires protrund from the rubber in the center of the door piller.
Pull the door weather strip out of it's groove up the door pillar and about 8 inches across the roof line. "NOW Take a carefull look at the door pillar where your window weatherstrip is going to fit. There will be a channel aprox.1/8 in. wide running from the top to the bottom of the door pillar. "NOW" Lift the piller flap on the weather strip of your window rubber and look carefully at the protrusion in the weatherstrip that fits into the groove in the door pillar. This is very important because unless you are certain that the protrusion in the weatherstrip is seated into the door pillar channel you "WILL NEVER" get the window in correctly.
Spray a generous amount of windex around the weatherstrip and window opening. Start the window into the opening by inserting the bottom front corner (bottom corner at door pillar) first. Push firmly down, forward, and inward to seat the corner into the winow opening, then move up the door pillar and try to get the top corner seated inward. At this point you either have it made or start over.
You will know by checking under the pillar flap and inside the car at the door pillar
to see if you your weatherstrip protrusion is in the door pillar channel or not. IF it is not just start over. If it is, gently swing the back of the window in toward the body, but do not push hard or the front will kick out. Starting at the door piller push on the glass firmly while pulling the wire to seat the weatherstrip up and down the door pillar and around the top and botton corners and then stop. Now you can push firmly on the rear to get the window flat against the opening and continue pulling the window in.

Hope This Helps any questions call: 260-570-6914
