Question about updating headlights

I have an 81 911SC I was wondering first if the headlights off of a 1985 Carrera will interchange. 2) Can I use my original trim rings or would I have to use the rings off the 85 carrera. Thanx in advance

I hesittae to reply, being a novice on this BB, but I think the answer is yes. The 1979-1986 911s used a halogen sealed beam light.

Automahn,

Why don't you upgrade to H-1 or H-4 headlights? They were made for European cars, but are a very popular retrofit for our US models Porsches. They are also superior to any US market headlight made in the 1980's.

The H-1/H-4 assemblies will easily fit into the headlight buckets of your SC and connect right to your existing wiring harness. There have been many posts on this board about H-1 and H-4's, so check out the archives.

Check out ebay, I recently saw some H4s there for a 911 and try WWW.coolbulbs.com. It seems they even have some items such as wiring harnesses with built in relays to power your higher wattage bulbs right from your battery with your existing wiring plugging into this harness to power the relay.

Yes they are interchangable. You can use the headlight body from the 85 with your trim rings from 81. I would, however, also recommend the H4 upgrade with the H4 paintable trim rings. Looks cool on the SC and they work ALOT better!

Here's a pic with H4's and painted rings.

Hope this helps.

Watch out for ebay H4 sales. I got
burned 2 years ago thinking I was buying
Bosch H4s from some clown in Florida. They
turned out to be Koni H4 knockoffs made
in India. They do match the sealed
beam mounts nicely though. They are
far better than the seal beam Halogens too.
The price was too good to be true (~$80)
but I did not know better. It was
my first Ebay auction purchase and I
thought I was clever.
