Is this ebay 964 for me (92 engine in a 91)?
My wife has just informed me that my project has been sold! So now I "need" a replacement!
Check this out: I talked to the owner. He said everything works, absolutely no oil leaks, and that he installed the '92 engine himself (of course, I'd never buy without a complete prepurchase inspection). The engine came out of a salvaged '92 and he says none of the common corrections have been performed on the car(e.g., head gasket, distributor vent, flywheel, etc.). My questions are: 1) How much should I expect to pay to fix the common 964 problems? This could be read as, "how much of a discount should I push for since these corrections have not been made?" 2) Which common problems should not be fixed until they surface? 3) Would a prepurchase inspection uncover any issues with a poor engine installation? 4) Where do I go to verify the "legitimacy" of the '92 engine? Don't want any stolen items. Can't wait to get back home! 7 more days and counting furiously! |

Fyi, that's not the first time I've seen that car auctioned. I don't know if it didn't meet an earlier reserve or what the reason might be.
I've seen a number of cars for sale where the owner just finished major repairs and/or overhauls. One question would be why is he selling it after all that work. Good luck, Wayne 90 C-4 Targa |

Hi Wayne, The owner says he's a regular on ebay. Says his hobby is to rebuild or fix P cars and sell them on ebay. Only thing I noticed is that on ebay he has changed his email address about 4 different times.
So I'll take your advice and be cautious. Anyway, I can't commit to any car until it passes a prepurchase inspection and I'm back in town. Thanks. John |

This is a Dealer car located in CA.I'm personally a little skeptical of CA dealers of used cars, especially one w/ a transplant.

Beware of independant dealers selling used Porsches. Often they have hidden accident damage, non-original parts, no maintenance records, high mileage, sloppy paintwork or branded titles. You think you're getting a great deal but as you discover the true history you find out that it wasn't.
The best cars are usually sold by private individuals or Porsche dealers under their "Certified" program. |

I don't think you will be happy with a tiptronic transmission in a high performance car. I would wait for a 5-speed to show up.

You guys are all right! From sitting here in Mexico City where I've only seen one P (a 993), the ebay listing looked real good. Plus, it being a tiptronic gave me thoughts of my wife being able to drive it (she hates manuals). Strange ideas enter your mind when you haven't driven or touched a P car for about a month. I'll have to stick to shopping with certified cars and the POC when I get back.
