low beams work...but off the directionals???

Maybe this is simply a matter of re-perusing the wiring diagrams (well, re-re-perusing them...) but when I installed H4 headlights and put in proper relays and heavy wiring, I connected one relay to one of the existing small-gauge low-beam wires and the other to one of the existing small-gauge high-beam wires. The high beams work fine: Turn the key on, pull out the light switch, push the directional stalk forward and I've got high beams. Pull the directional stalk one click back, though, and there's nothing. Pull the stalk one more click toward the driver and the low beams work--i.e. the headlight-flasher feature. Funny thing is, though, that the low beams come on steadily--but the directionals don't--if I signal for either a left or right turn. Any advice, or is this just a piece of inexplicably screwed-up miswiring on my part?
