Moving from California to Ohio -- Advice Requested
The Air Force has re-assigned me to Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio
![]() ![]() So, I ask the forum 2 questions: 1: I know I'm going to ship in an enclosed trailer - I'd appreciate any advice people can give wrt to car transport. I'm paying for this "out-of-pocket" because the government will only pay for 1 car (I'm single). I'm driving my other car cross country. If it matters, I have a few people who could receive the car if the truck beats me. 2: For those of you in Dayton, I'd appreciate mechanic recommendations. As much as I'd like to work stuff myself - I don't have the tools, training, or time for some tasks. Thanks in advance for your help. EDIT: I'm going to search the forum on the car transport item as I've seen it before, but rather than resurrect an old thread I wanted to kill 2 birds with one stone.

I don't know if they'd be available for you out there, but I used Intercity on an '08 RS once. (From Cincinnati to New York) Both myself and the guys on the receiving end were pleased with them. They were very professional, prompt, trustworthy and have carried a LOT of high-end Porsches around.
Interesting your post count is (or rather - was) 141. I flew C-141s at Wright-Patt for about 14 years. They're all gone now though ![]() Dayton Area Mechanics: Danny King at P3 Automotive in Centerville Ken Farler: between Middletown and Lebanon off SR 122 Yuri Rojas at The Garaj I know all three of them and I believe they're all good. I know Danny and Ken best though so I'd recommend them.

Personally, unless it's a 100% show car or a $100k+ car, I think the need for an enclosed trailer is way over blown. I just shipped a very nice '73 914 (5yo paint in near perfect) from Detroit to San Diego for $650. Enclosed was $1400+.
It arrived perfect and with no additional wear/problems/chips, and I'd do it again like that. Just my opinion. |

Welcome to Dayton! Have been to Wright Pat Airforce Museum many times and it is quite impressive. As for the best mechanic in town for Porsches, it is going to be Danny King at P-3 Automotive in Centerville, Ohio (937 312-9950). He is about 20mins. from Wright Patterson AFB. If I were to ship a car from the West Coast I would contact John Dixon at Tajmagaj.com. He is probably the largest collector of all things Porsche in town and he must have vast shipping experience. Too bad you aren't going to be here for July 26 when P-2-O is holding their annual Porsche gathering in Oxford, Ohio. They are expecting 500 cars this year! Good luck with your move.

Intercity is good, as is Fedex/Passport.

Texas Plates -- military does have some perks
![]() And they are staying plated in Texas (where they don't smog '75s no matter what engine I put in there) until I get out.

Oh and don't go cheap, pay for expedited shipping if offered. You can read some horror stories of cars sitting for weeks to save a buck. Read the reviews of shippers, then choose and it's usually not a hassle at all.

No smog checks in most parts of Ohio (yet). Seven counties out of 88 require them; they are Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit.

Nothing from the '70s gets tested - even in those counties.
