Sun roof crank

My 88 Carrera has no emergency sun roof crank. After looking at the Bentley manual and examining the mechanism in the car, it looks like I could just make one by getting a screw of the same size as the one that grips the crank, and putting it through a hole on the end of a piece of metal, and maybe a little knob at the other end. Has anyone tried this?
How reliable are the sunroof motors? I would hate to get caught in the rain with the roof open and no emergency crank.
The sun roof crank is not listed in any of the Porsche parts catalogues that I have found, so I assume they are unobtainable.

My experience (dad's 80 SC, my '85) is these motors are quite reliable. I have found the sunroof cables which connect to the sunroof fail more often than the switches, fuses, and motors.

Now you have me thinking, I don't have this emergency sunroof crank either.

John,

That sounds like an interesting idea. Especially when you find out that the replacement cranks cost about $80.

I think that most sunroof problems on the 911 surround around the cables becoming misaligned or broken, rather than motor failure. This may or may not cause the loss of the ability to close the roof. Since the hand crank basically actuates the motor manually, cable problems may render the roof inoperable even with the crank.

HOwever...I would still keep one in the toolbox.

Nick.

Ode to a cable! There is a little nut ..a very special serrated nut that locks the rear height adjustment so the rear of the sunroof is pushed up and seals to the roof. PO somehow lost the nut. Probably fell off and went down the drain hole and out onto the road. Don't try to find that nut in the parts catalog. I ended up buying a whole new cable just to get that precious little gem! Sooo...ummm...coupe owners check yer nuts! (Couldn't resist that)
