Hit and run at Thunderhill.
 

A friend of mine spends a lot of time at Thunderhill. On Sunday, May 25th (Memorial weekend) he was badly injured at Thunderhill.

He was in the paddock (in front of garage #2) around 5 PM buttoning up his 911 for the ride home. A pickup truck towing an enclosed trailer backed into him, knocking him over. The trailer then backed over him breaking his foot, ankle and leg. He also suffered a shoulder injury and a minor head injury.

The driver left the scene without identifying himself. No one recorded the plate #'s. It turns out that my friend may have some tendon and nerve injury. He may have a long and difficult recovery. His insurance company is balking at payments because the responsibility properly rests with the drivers insurance company.

That's a very bizarre position to take, but it seems like insurance companies are acting in very bad faith these days in denying claims.

Never heard of medical insurance requiring its insured to become a private investigator and track down someone before making medical payments.

The insurance company should pay the medical bills, your friend subrogates his claim against he driver, and the insurance company can track the driver down and try to collect against him, if they want.

I think it's a disability policy issue. The point is that he doesn't know the drivers identity. Honestly I think he's more interested in an apology than anything else.

It sounds like a research issue. I'm not familiar with the track, but shouldn't there be a record of everyone and every vehicle that had a paddock pass (although, yes, I am aware of the multiple-person pass-off tricks)?

Does he know the type of truck involved? Shouldn't there be vehicle descriptions (color, make) of all 200? Please forgive me if I seem like I'm trying to pester here . . .

that sucks for your friend moses. a track day is suppose to be fun. hope he heals up quick.

Definitely. He stopped for a bit but didn't get out and identify himself. He may not have known how badly injured the guy was.

You've probably already thought of this, I would start by contacting the event organizers.

Well, that will be an easy one. Only 200 people to track down. Lots of those people did not tow so they will be weeded out. Then it's on to how many who towed to the track had an enclosed hauler.

Truth is this is one for the cops to sort out. Even if there was no smoking gun or robbery there was still a criminal act committed here. Not to say that the guy with the trailer is destined for Pelican Bay, it's just going to be the cops that track him down and get his insurance to pay off your friend. One can't leave the scene of an accident of any kind without leaving I.D.. Since T-Hill's paddock is open to the public the CHP will use the same rules as any other road when it comes to something like this.

You'd think, for liability purposes, the race track would have some kind of security camera running.
