are most moly greases the same?
 

finally got all my parts in the mail today for cv repack and shift bushing/ball cup replacement, etc. only need the grease now. should i only use the swepco stuff? any other alternatives i could get locally that will be just as good? (i don't know much about grease, although it sure likes hangin' around me for some reason...)

I am planning to do one...one of my boots is torn...

I know I need new boots

I am planning to order from automotion/performance parts
(they are havng a sale)

but tweeks seems more thorough...

any input would be great

maybe us doing this at the same time will help us help each other out

My favorite grease for CV's and wheel bearings is Swepco 101. Reasonably priced and excellent grease.

i compiled my list of needs from the friendly folk here on this bbs!

i believe for your car you'll need 4 new cv gaskets, 2 tubes of moly grease, replacement boots for any of yours that are showing cracking or wear, and possibly a 12pt. 8mm adapter for the cv bolts if you have those type on your car. i think you'll also need some circlip pliers, a torque wrench, and a plastic hammer should you need extra 'assistance'.

i got all of my parts here at pelican, of course! :-) their prices were competitive with the others mentioned, plus i like to support our host when i can.

i'm going to try and dig in here by the weekend... want to tackle my shift assembly stuff first. i'd be glad to correspond as i progress; just let me know.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago and yup, that's what you need. when I do this job now, I recall the days when I did not have a bench vise for this. I shake my head.

Some boots come with the gaskets already on. Some boots do not come with grease.

Grease volume for this job is a controversy. Some say a tube is enough. I say it's not. The grease I seem always to be using has lots of German words printed on it. This is a signal of quality.

Oh, one more thing. I always seem to have trouble getting one joint off. Three come off easy. Put the stubborn one on TOP of the vise jaws with the shaft going down through the jaws. Be sure the jaws are supporting the inner race properly, and drive the shaft down through the joint. Have an assistant hold the shaft so it does not hit the floor. Here's the really important part: use anything but a steel hammer.

Oh, and one more thing. these things look like you could get them clean without taking them apart, but you can't. Early Bentley manuals seem to have a KILLER CV joint section that will apply equally to your car. Mine is for '85 and on VW Rabbits, but they're all the same. Even used book stores have them

To answer your question directly, no they aren't all the same. But, at the same time, I have used Quaker State and Amsoil moly greases on the CV-joints in the past with good results.

The important characteristic for Cv-joints is a high-temperature rating, which means a NLGI #2 approved grease!

i feel i should share something so some of you don't order the wrong parts. for those of you who are going to do this job and have an '85 model like mine, you need to know the specific tranny model you have before ordering. earlier '85's (the ones with the 915.68 tranny) fit into the '84 model spec with respect to axles, boot/flanges, and gaskets. the only catalog that i've seen that does a good job of distinguishing these particulars is the performance parts catalog. all the others i've seen just lump all of the '85's together with respect to axle parts. you can find this version number stamped on the underside of your transmission.

...fwiw... time to get greasy...
