SSI & Oil return tubes
Sorry guys & girls, I am confused.
Looking through previous posts, I find indications that SSI heat exchangers may have to be removed to install new (collapsable) oil return tubes. Here in Porsche-country, you will find Stainless Steel exhausts and -heat exchangers for both old style systems (left & right, two inlet muffler) and later style (2 identical (left), single inlet muffler). So, when you are talking about SSI, do you exclusively mean the old style? Will I face any problems trying to replace my oil return tubes having the later style heat exchangers/muffler? Thanks for the resolution! Jens '76 CIS with '73 body conversion |

Jens,
SSI is a brand name for some very nice 2 in 2 out headers with heat. The design is very similar to the 74 and earlier oem exhausts, some of which were made from stainless steel and some from mild steel. The SSI exhaust is a performance enhancement for all 911 engines up through the 3.2, they are a simple bolt on in all reespects to 83 and earlier engines and can be used on 84-89 if the heating connection to the chassis is modified. As far as I know all of the 75 on single in, single out exhausts are made from stainless steel but are not made by SSI. The oil return tubes are difficult to get at with SSIs I can provide a pic if you wish. |
