TRY SELLING ANYTHING W/OUT A/C IN ARIZONA! may as well be selling turds in a punch bowl! while others are roasting at grid line up................a twist of the knob blows cool air over my very hot to wear nomex suit!
if i expected to win races and garner trophies i would yank it in a heartbeat. im 50 years old on the downhill side of things, ive got my trophies ...........big deal! having fun and being comfortable is where its at! or better yet.........."hey baby (to some hottie) wanna go for a ride in my zoomy zoomy race race go fast porsche?" "oh by the way in a 1/2 hour youll be sticking to the seats and smelling like a pig , but we will look wayyyyyyyyy cool when we arrive at the restaurant looking like we spent a month in baja in june!" |
I got rid of everything except the fan in the smuggler's box. It is very useful on humid and yes, hot, days. No regrets whatsoever. Car feels much snappier. To the question of removing weight from the rear, how can that be a bad thing in a 911?

Unless it is your daily driver and you live in AZ, TX, or Fl, I would remove your A/C.
Just Yesterday, I removed every single A/C component in my car in about 4 hours...took my time and didn't cut any hoses. I live in Knoxville, TN and drive my car about 1 time a week. A/C didn't work well, and i recharched with r134 about 3 months ago...system virutally had no oil left yesterday! I almost never used my A/C anyhow, just rolled down the windows and listen to my M&K:D. And yes, my car is BLACK WITH BLACK LEATHER INTERIOR. Since this was one of the hottest summers on record here (90s a lot this year, and 3 days straight over 100), i realized i can live without A/C and decided yesterday to yank it all out to save weight. I took it ALL out, even everything in the smugglers box..getting the compressor bracket off, I had to remove the muffler and a bracket, which added some time....I also drained a full washer tank and removed my rear bumperettes (which were amazingly heavy)....all told I lost about 90 lbs. So in essence, I effectively gained @ 10 hp (100 lb loss = effective 10 hp gain) and cleaned up part of my engine bay.:) |
Vote YES on A/C.
I drive my SC 2-3 times a week. I wasn't driving it when it was over 95 or so (gets over 100 here in summer). I recharged my stock A/C and enjoy it a lot more. Have to add a pound every other year. I also removed the bowtie and fabbed a directional vent for about 20 bucksthat works great. I also bought a set of early vent windows that I'll put in this winter. I think that will make a huge difference. |
Living down here in the Caribbean, is a must to have A/C.
I studied the system and found out that the unit was sold as an optional package from "YORK". I found that where the avaporator was installed there is a duct that constantly draw hot air from the road to the evaporator, limiting the eficiency of the small unit. Since we don't need heating down here, I just ductaped the hole to stop the hot air in and the results are great . The efficiency of the avaporator was greater. Maybe this is not the answer for must of you You need a system that can provide heating too. The next upgrade will be a rotary compressor pretty sooon. I also made one of this VicSmileWavy A sub cooler http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1192380217.jpg |
I got rid of everything...including the stuff in the smugglers box. Also got rid of the controls in the console.
I have a targa and it's a pleasure driver. |
maybe that's what I meant - "snappier" as gunlover05 says. I just wasn't expecting to feel such a difference in the rear end while cornering, It just feels different, lighter with less control - to be expected I guess. I like the cleaner look of the engine though

Mine's gone. Never worked, leaked refrigerant faster than I could add it (literally. Had a hole somewhere). Removed it in bits. Whenever something was in the way of a repair, it got added to the nice box it's all sitting in now. I have about 7' of hose & decklid condenser still on the car...
2 windows work nicely in Michigan - kids love 'em open. 2 or 3 states south, I'd be inclined to get it working again.... |
Gunlover , IMHO you can add Ohio to that list .
At least us with black in and out cars . My car had it's a/c completely removed and I'm putting it back on . Mind you........I'm not going stock A/C ! ( Aftermarket evap unit , better front condensor , barrier hoses , sub cooler and some different vents ) Why do you think it's called Mr. Potato-head :D ? SxS |
I removed mine also, made the engine compartment much more roomy. Now I can change the plugs without bleeding.
The problem with the old R12 systems is the underused compressor and old barrier hoses leak and the R12 is expensive. I have a dozen PO receipts going back to 86 for recharges. I will eventually install new AC but it's not a huge priority with me. There are some aftermarket kits out there in the $1-2K range that are supposed to be good. |
Added A/C to my non-A/C '74 targa...and glad I did. Heck, even KIAs and Yugos have operational A/C...surely a classy car like a 911 rates a working system.

82 SC Targa, I'm taking mine out this saturday. My mechanic at Lomita 911 suggested that I take off the A/C unit and condensor and tuck back the hoses until I do a complete removal. I will do the complete removal on saturday.
He removed my belt and unplugged the unit last week after a new alternator. Let me know how your project went. |
You can live without it. If it was your Daily, that would be another story.

Targa + Bay Area = A/C Delete ;)

PO completely removed the A/C, no plans to re-fit. On my 944, the A/C was great for de-misting - but the 930 will boil the water off the screen in seconds. I only roll the window up if it's raining anyway. |
My entire AC system was removed, soup to nuts when we did the suspension upgrade. It didn't work and if I want it later I will upgrade to an aftermarket system thta has more cooling power. The netire aftermarket system is about 2,000 or so (I think)) and repairing my "didn't worlk well when new" system would be big $$$ anyway and never be effective.
JMHO |
It is good to have on the highway or when raining or when the temperature is below 90. If the temperature is above 90 I do not drive my car because the A/C cant cool the car.
At least convert to the 134R so you can recharge it yourself and dont sink a fortune in the freon. The only problem with that is that 134 doesnt cool quite as well. |
