1967 speaker hole locations/ do 911s float?

I am going though my newly aquired 1967 911 and realizing I paid WAYWAYWAY too much!!! I think it has lots of non- 1967 parts and is held together by duct-tape. Anyway, does anyone know what the stock 67 had in terms of speaker holes? This one has one in the dash and two in each door (factory cuts)- both the dash and door panels were covered by upholstery. If anyone wants to know if 911s float, email me in a few weeks; I'm going to jump this one off a bridge.
Thanks-
JC

JC,

If you intend to end your mortal days by jumping the car off a bridge, why not use a less messy approach and leave the car to be parted out by us SWB gurus? Or better yet, live to see her restored to former glory.

But seriously, our cars didn't come with radios. The only audio equipment is the small paper cone factory speaker in the dash. There were never such things as factory door speakers, they were all added later by uncaring, unfeeling Prior Owners who had little regard for rustproofing so long as they could pump out "Light My Fire" by The Doors (1967). My car even has a distorted dash panel where some DPO (Dumb Prior Owner) attached an 8-track under the dash with what looks like about a dozen wood screws.

You think you got RUST? You ain't seen nothin' till you seen DarrylD transform a jaw-clocked heap into a 20% Dansk time warp machine in the making! http://members.aol.com/darryld/912.htm

Quiz
------

1. The below door panel is:

a) Factory installed Quadrophonic Blau Punkt
b) Brutal hackjob by a hopped-up Stereo Punk; or
c) A great way to check your license plate while driving.

Correct Answer: b

Good luck!

Hey- I got the quiz right! Only because I have the same hack job! It's not that bad; just not what I thought it would be. Bondo in 3 places and the floor pans were replaced (amateur job). I guess I'm trying to figure out if the doors are even for my car. When I pulled the panels, I have two- factory openings that look like speaker holes (about 5" round). When I pulled the dash cover, I have a 6 x 4 opening that's definately a speaker hole. Dash metal replaced maybe? I figure I've got to put $3-$4k into it to make it right- that and a lot of "sweat equity". I'll post pics if anyone is interested.
Thanks for the reply!!

Dash is actually a 4x10 but you should replace it with a 4x6. I did and I love it. I wouldn't put door speakers back in if you can find two good door panels. If you can't then speakers it is! I would say replaced steel is a plus not a minus. Mine has new inner and outer rockers, lock posts, door bottoms, and floors all the way up to the front, not just half floors. I am very glad it does because 40 year ungalvanized steel looks like kibble n bits. If it runs and is clean I would say your car is more of a starting point than what others have. Don't forget to install some chain tensioner stops as a part of the restoration, its only about $50 and 3 hours of labor and it will save your engine if a tensioner fails.

Lovetrucks, if your doors are original, the last three digits of your VIN should be stamped into them about midway down. If you would post pictures of the doors (come on now, don't be shy!) I will both tell you whether they are original and add them to my ultimate 911 door thread: 911 door compatibility?

Bondo in 3 places ain't the record, either.

Let's see this car!

If the factory didn't intend for speakers to be installed in the door panels of early cars, then why does the 5" hole exist right where a speaker would be mounted?

A round hole is less likely to tear the sheet metal and provides a convenient way for the line workers to assemble the door.

Certainly they later enlarged the hole to facilitate the installation of two-way speakers, but this was later. See the door thread, you can see when the hole was enlarged.

Can't find the vin on the door- is it on the mechinsm end or elsewhere?
Anyway, here are the pics- note the filled over torsion bar access

Have a claim going against the shop so hopefully most of the major issues will get ironed out.

Two more-

I have the original deck lid but it needs some attention; so the ill-fitting duck gets to hang out for a bit.

I think you are going to need a great deal of money to put that particular car back to original condition. I would purpose build it to suit an rs spec or "outlaw" S or RSR style. Check out early 911s registry for inspiration on some tasteful modifications. Cheers
