Interesting...

Cliffnotes: Top Tier gas reduces carbon buildup and is better for your car...

I didn't see them define anywhere what "Top Tier" is? Are we talking a certain brand? Shell? Speedway? Chevron?

I don't think I have ever seen a pump labelled "Top Tier."

Costco is nice because it's on the top of all of the best fuel lists, it's "top tier", and it's cheap.

$2.34 for 91 octane today. :-)

Techron - is there a need to use it if you use top tier gas?

If you shop around (the "cheap gas" app is great for finding tier one brand stations) it's fairly easy to find tier one gas at a fair price.

Also, anyone know if Safeway gas is tier one?

Thanks

Very interesting. My Wife's Hyundai has been having some of the problems described. Thought maybe it could be non top tier fuel but she usually fills up with Costco gas.

Well, Safeway, Sunoco, and Gulf are not on the list. Plus all those neighborhood discount gas places.

The list changes over time. It used to be a lot shorter. Here in the Boston area there are lots of Mobil stations, but they didn't used to be Top Tier. Shell was the only common Top Tier that was easy to find here.

I'm guessing that not all gas stations that have a brand on their gas that's included in the Top Tier list are really dispensing Top Tier gas.

On the Mass Turnpike they rebranded the stations from Exxon to Gulf a few years ago, but I believe initially they were still selling the Exxon fuel. I don't know how common that is. I bet it is pretty rare.

Techron

If you already fill up with Chevron, do you ever need to dump in a bottle of the pure techron? Is that Seafoam stuff worth it? I've heard mixed reviews.

I've used the Seafoam treatment on another motor to clear out a lot of gunk from the intake manifold and such. It definitely creates a plume of white smoke that will panic your neighbors and attract any number of law enforcement, EMT, and firemen to your location, guns drawn, stretchers ready, axes and hoses waving. I didn't notice any change in the performance of the motor afterward, but I may have been a little distracted.

I've used Techron with great success for 25 years. I have been on family trips where my family car was running a bit rough, then added a bottle of Techron while getting gas and rough running goes right away. Amazing!

If you are located in one of the boutique regions (see report) like we are here in MA, don't all stations (name branded or local on the corner) have to comply? It would be interesting to know how these boutique formulations differ from Top Tier. Finally, it would be interesting to see a similar study using a fuel additive like SeaFoam or Techron. Has anyone run across these? I haven't had time to search yet.

One of the references in this paper is a really good over view of fuels, additives, oxygenation, after market additives, etc but the link in the paper has an extra space. Here is a working link to it:

https://www.chevron.com/-/media/chevron/operations/documents/motor-gas-tech-review.pdf

A very interesting read. Pg 79- talks about additives.

The best thing you can do to your car is stick to 1 brand. This will help it not mix the different additives together causing potential for more gumming/deposits that may be cleaned better with a single additive doing what it's intended to do without other fuels fighting over it. Thankfully living in California, we basically have the cleanest fuel in the world here, and pay for it.

Good amount of info:
