i must have a big air leak

this morning started out fine. then i stopped at a red light and the car cut off as soon as i put in the clutch. next light, i push in the clutch and rpm's go straight to 0.
it backfired earlier, so i am hoping the poppoff valve is stuck open, if not, i suspect the metal line for the AAR and AAV. i noticed it was rubbing when i had the motor out last time. i tried to bend it up, so maybe it is rubbing again.

you know, i can see how someone could take a problem like this, and just idle the car up and keep driving, then they might notice later the car is not quite right. then they start replacing stuff that is not related to the orginal problem, and perhaps create a few others. mine is rather sudden, but if an air leak comes on slow, you could easily continue to cover it up.

have a look at the brake vacuum hose. it travels from the left side of the intake, down past the trans and attaches to a tube at the back of the tunnel. they tend to split down where they go over the torsion bar tube. does the power assist feel normal?

thanks JW. i saw your post about that. i pulled a vacuum on the line a few months ago and it held. i looked at the popoff valve this morning and the brake line was one of the things i thought about. i have a feeling it is that metal pipe in the rear for the AAV.

it did not even try to idle once warm. i started it a little while ago and it started fine. i let it idle for a while, maybe not long enough for the AAR to completely heat up and close.
you know, when i was finishing the timing belt on the new BMW last night, i thought, now its time for the 911 to break so i am still at only one car to drive.
