John,
Thanks...I hope it looks good in my 72's engine bay. Here's a better link for more details on this rebuild: http://www.pelicanparts.com/MotorCity/hatari/rebuild-3.html Jack McAllister (Hatari) |
I'm going to be needing a sweet pic of a motor for my next book (911 engine rebuilding). If you have your motor out of the car, take some nice photos of it, and hang onto them for about a year.

Wait a sec. I thought that the 16-cylinder motors were never actually used, and were only a design exercise...

That pic of a 16-cylinder 917 engine (never given a separate type-number) is that of a 'used' engine in the Porsche museum! There were parts acquired in 1970 and 1971 for ten engines, with two diffent cranks, both 66 mm and 70.4 mm, and any of the 917 cylinder and piston sizes could be used. At least three different engines were built in different sizes and extensively test and developed on the dyno, then installed in the 917-027 chassis -- the original 917PA car raced by Jo Siffert! Extensive testing was done at Weissach in both 1970 and 1971 by the factory test driver, as well as Jo Siffert and Mark Donohue, whom I gather was a bit scared of the car, because the chassis was 'unsorted' at the time, and he said 'It was a MONSTER in a straight line!' He was told that it, too, could be turbocharged for 2000 hp or more! The 16-cylinder 917 engine is featured on pp. 700-703 of Karl Ludvigsen's Porsche: Excellence was Expected.
Had not the energy crisis of 1973-74 scared the SCCA into causing the Can-Am series to commit suicide, that certainly could have been some spectacular racing ... with long-wheelbase 917s and 2000+ hp on tap!!! People can say what they like about F1 racing, but the Cam-Am series WAS the most exciting motorsport ever conceived and provided more innovation in race car engineering than anything else, ever, anywhere! The following scans from my First Edition, autographed Ludvigsen ... show the twin 908 distributors and MFI pumps on an engine which fired two cylinders simultaneously, one from each distributor! The stated hp output from the version using the 90 mm Nikasils is fairly impressive, too! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...16EXC-1-40.jpg http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...16EXC-2-32.jpg ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I couldn't resist here...I have pictures of some amazing engines, but was recently impressed with this 930 engine. It is not mine, but a poster on the Turbo discussion board. Everything was powder painted and plated...it looks like new! I have larger pictures if your want them. I will soon be posting mine... David |
One shot before, and one after detail work.

Well I've dropped my engine out, what a bloody oily mess! I'm sandblasting the engine tin and having it powder coated (is that what most people do?)the P/O's brush painted effort just didn't cut it.
Can anyone tell me what to use to bring up the magnesium parts, a friend used to have a tub of "cold dip" that worked really well, but I don't know what it was, any ideas? I have been taking photos and will post them in due corse. Thanks everyone for your posts, please keep 'em comming! ------------------ John Forcier 69 911T |
By the way, I can't find the previous threads on polishing/painting engine fan and shrouds. What is the consensus on renewing the look of the fan and other such bits...paint 'em or polish them and spray some kind of protectant over them?

I think the general consensouse is powder paint the outer ring and polish the fan (it will require maintenenance since it will start to look oxidized).
I had all of the tin and metal brackets chemically stripped and powder painted. As for plaiting, check out http://www.reliableplating.com/guide.htm David |
Hmmm, show you my engine...
Lemme look for it. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...engine-bay.jpg Ah here it is, and most of it's guts... http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate...gine-parts.jpg Well, you asked for it. ------------------ Charlie Baer '79 Euro 911SC [This message has been edited by thabaer (edited 06-09-2001).] |
