Hid 1988 911
I am not clear about HID for my 1988 911. Is there a new assembly or just a bulb? How about a new lens? All the kits look the same. They just don't seem well designed. Is there a complete retro fit assembly?

Not possible on a '89 and older 911... unless you engineer it your self. We use a twin element bulb and HID are single... not to mention the reflector is completely fubarred for HID application... that said, you could give up your high beams and just use the lows... I do that on my beetle as the lows are good enough for 90% of the driving I do at night.
there was a guy designing a bi-xenon kit which is what we really need... he had a thread on here somewhere... but like many projects I think it never got finished... Your best bet is buying the relay kit and putting 100/80s for bulbs. Best regards, Michael

Thank you for the response. I've been looking for weeks. I am surprised though. It seems like a Porsche would be a perfect car for HID.

If you do a search you'll find there are a few who have done it with an H4/H5 kit. It is not DOT legal with H4 or H5 lenses (but neither are 80/100w bulbs), and will probably blind oncoming traffic, but it can be done. I tried it on an old car with H4 lenses (Audi) and did not like the muddy beam pattern it created. You also have to potentially cut the metal in the bucket to mount the ballast.
HIDs would probably work well with H1's because of the separate high beam bulb, but I don't think anyone wants to hack an H1 because of their value.

An alternative is to take your fogs out and fit some HID aux driving lights. Just a thought, I did this with 80W driving lights and it made the world of difference.

I had the h4 low beam on my sc and loved it. You can adjust the beam well enough to not kill anyone. It's not as sharp a line as with conventional halogen but they are very bright and clear.

Read this:
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html I ended up getting Audi bi zenons and using old 911/bug lenses and fabbing it up myself. I was starting from zero, essentially, for lights, and thought it might be a 'fun' project. I really don't like it when I see the HID bulbs shoved in reflector/lens units that werent designed for them, it's nasty for everyone else on the road. (IMHO)
