930 wheel on 87-911

For those of you that have changed your stock 911 steering wheel to the 930 wheel, I would like to get your thoughts of the comfort and over all feel. Oh yeah, feel free to post pics!

Way, way better. Better feel, better ergonomics. Thicker, softer, grippier, better contoured to hold in a number of positions, I could go on but I'll just tell you to buy one.

Incidentally, I have a 968CS wheel, not the 930.

AJUSA used to sell these on ebay. I and a number of people got ours from them. Good service, but the price last I heard was going up pretty fast. Wayne might sell it as well.

930S with embossed crest--anyone know?

I have a smaller Momo that I really like, probably a similar diameter to the 930. I would suggest you go for it.

Tried it, didn't like it.

Like the "look", but I like the leverage and precision afforded by the larger diameter of the stock wheel, and in my driving position, it hid the speedometer above about 40-50 mph (and I didn't want to rotate the gages).

I'm now using a stock-style wheel with the factor option hub extension.

If I could get a 930 (or 968CS) style wheel in the same diameter as the Carrera stock wheel, that's what would be in my car now.

True. That part is annoying.

I have the 930s wheel on my 89 911 and don't understand how it hides the speedometer at 40-50, if then, why not all the time? I see my gauges just fine.
I like the part that it is off center, so when getting in and out you have more leg room. Plus, it sits farther away from the dash so your fingers have more room when turning.

I have been using one for a couple of months now. It is mounted without the offset, which I didn't care for. Even without the offset there is plenty of room between the dash and the wheel for my fingers and the space seems pretty much the same as the original 3 spoke SC wheel. I like the looks and feel of the wheel but it took some time to get use to it [I've been driving the same car for 25yrs]. The annoying thing is not being able to see the speedo between 50 and 90 or so. I might have to do the 'boy racer' thing and rotate the gauge or trade the wheel for the RUF or CS version.

I don't understand, my wheel came as a one piece unit, it has the offcenter offset built in and it sits about 1 1/2 inch back from the dash pad. I have never noticed not being able to read the speedo.

When I put it in, it hid the speedometer dial starting at the line for 50 mph or so.

Whether this occurs for you is probably a function of seating position and height. I'm 6' 1" and usually have the seat all the way back, but with the seatback reclined only enough that my head doesn't hit the roof (except over fast bumps).

Aside from my preference for the larger diameter wheel, (I think the larger diameter works better with the non-assisted steering and relatively wide tires), I don't need to get any better acquainted with the local law enforcement officers.

"Do you know how fast you were going?!"
"No, officer, because my steering wheel blocks my view of the speedometer..."

I guess my biggest concern is the wheel diameter. A smaller wheel usually means more muscle needed in tight parking situations.

Odd. For me, the wheel hid from 80-120 (I'm not going to say I need those in day to day driving, but if you did, it's important to know where in that scale you happen to be). I just rotated the speedo. Not a big deal. It's a conversation starter for most, and no one that would accuse me of being a boy racer is typically in my car.

I'll agree that the larger diameter is easier at low speeds, but in my opinion nowhere near enough to trade off for the benefits that the 968 wheel gives the rest of the time.

OK, there may be a difference, I am only 6'0 and I drive a targa so I have about four inches of head room, don't have to mess with the seat.

The hub came as a one piece unit with the offset spacer attached. I had to take it apart to remove the spacer. Steering effort seems to be pretty much the same, meaning it doesn't feel any different to me then the SC wheel did. The speedo issue surfaced while out on the interstate and trying to maintain a sane crusing speed. I too am 6' tall and driving a targa with sport seats. Its really not a deal breaker because most of my pleasure driving is back roads. The wheel is really very nice and a worthy upgrade. I can tilt the gauge some...I just don't want it to start me on the path to white gauge faces and aluminum trim rings!

Installed mine a few weeks ago, like it a lot! Those with speedo challenges are I'm sure just very "tall in the saddle", people who are tall from the "seat up", kinda like my pop-in-law...6'-1" or so and wears 30" inseam pants!! Me, I'm more legs than torso, and not EVEN 6', so no problem with the gauges.

At 5' 7" I'm just north of being "Mini Me's" twin so I guess I might not have an issue with seeing the speedo gauge

Jgordon,
What is the diameter of the 968CS steering wheel?

do it and you'll wonder why you waited so long. Huge improvement, especially over the rather uninspired Carrera OEM unit. Install is easy, 30 minutes tops.

These wheels were made for Porsche by Atiwe.
http://www.atiwe-rdi.com/english/home/frames.html

The OEM wheels were 360mm in dia - the offset was required by the German TüV for the aftermarket 320mm version so you could still read the gauges.

Atiwe still sells these wheels in the aftermarket as the 'Indianapolis'. I'm not sure if the wheels offered by our host and their competitors as the 930S-style 'Formel' are the same as the 'Indianapolis' - I'd assume they are, though. To make the aftermarket wheel look stock, you can either buy the crest Wayne sells or buy the OEM 968 hornpad (in the pic above). This only cost around €60 last year over here. PN is 968 347 059 00 8YR (got the # off the web so make sure it's correct before ordering).

I purchased the crest from Porsche and sunk it into my hornpad 17-18 years ago. Still love the wheel and the look. And Dean, I'm 6'0 too and the wheel blocks a portion of the sppedo. Maybe you have a very short upper body and very long legs
