Cam removal
I'm trying to take the sprocket that attaches to the cam off and am having no luck. Haynes isn't much help. Do I need a special tool for this??? I can't figure out how to get the damn thing off and i'm done trying. I need some help.... no wait, i'm beyond help but try anyways. Thank

Adam,
A 46 mm or 1 13/16" socket and breaker bar or impact wrench is needed, and the flywheel must be locked in place. Without an engine stand this is a bit tricky! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Thanks Warren, I was just checking out the pelican parts tool section and it looks like i'm going to have to drop about 500 on tools to do this job. While i'm at it, do you happen to know if the tensioners and heads can be removed at the same time? Thanks

Adam,
If you mean, can the three heads, cam tower, and chain/tensioner housing be detached as one piece with the five parts still bolted together ... I suppose so. But, you need to remove the cam nut while the 'unit' is still attached, of course! As far as the tool list goes, I'm not sure you have to spend $500 in special tools. The cam nut crowfoot is one of the most expensive on Bruce Anderson's list, and it isn't needed at all if a 'regular' 46 mm or 1 13/16" socket is already on hand or can be found in a bargain bin or cheap 3/4" drive set (which is what I have ... the whole set was $50) ... and for the pre-80.5 engines the special cam holder and sprocket locking pin tools aren't needed, either! I will go through the whole list, and get back with alternatives to Bruce's 'expensive' list. It goes without saying that you will need a good-quality torque wrench, though a top-of-the-line dial indicator isn't mandatory ... the inexpensive Chinese models wil work just fine. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

You're a great guy, Warren. And it's true that special tools can often be avoided. Interestingly, I have found that the Bentley manuals often have mentioned many alternatives to the special tools. Fortunately, internal engine and gear box parts are pretty hard to bend or break. Just don't scratch them.

I'll second that, Warren, you kick ass! I'm i'm ever in your neck of the woods (where ever that is) I'm taking you out for a beer, or two or three! Thanks guys I appreciate it. I'm going to look for the crows foot tommorow and I'm going to look into alternatives. If you can post that list that you ahve Warren that would be great too.
I seem to have two differnt cam nuts under each chain tensioner. Is that normal? One has holes all around it and the other has what appears to be a washer and a BOLT. rather odd actually. Let me know some feed back guys. Adam |
