Hot film air flow meter for 911/brake upgrades

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of installing
the Bosch Hot film air flow meter from the 993 into a 3.2 911 in place of the DME system

There are a few companies in the UK who do it but I don't have any feedback as to its effectiveness.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Also any advice on upgrading brakes to Boxster spec or turbo

Thanks in anticipation

I believe FVD makes a kit for that application. I am probably going to use their kit for my 964.

Steve,

I believe the "hot film airflow meter" is referred to as a Mass Airflow Sensor here in the States. It uses a hot wire system to regulate intake air flow, instead of the flapper door in the original DME system.

There are a couple of companies (Autothority, Huntley Racing) here that sell Mass Airflow Sensors for 3.2 Carreras. I know some people that have installed the Mass Airflow Sensors on their Carreras and seem to be very pleased. Most people who switch to the Mass Airflow Sensor also switch to a different DME chip in order to maximize performance from the new intake system.

I have the original DME intake system on my 3.2 Carrera, so I can't give you any first hand reports.

As far as brakes go, I think the Carrera brakes are very good for most applications; YMMV. Some owners who Club Race or do a lot of track events upgrade their Carrera brakes to "Big Reds" (turbo) for improved braking.
The downside is that turbo brakes are expensive.

I use the original Carrera brakes with slotted rotors, carbon kevlar pads (track use only), and improved air flow to the front brakes. On the street, I use Metalmaster pads. This combo works fine for me and costs a lot less than "Big Reds".

Regards, Bruce

I tried to get some information from Autothority about their MAF kit. They were singularly unhelpful, only willing to provide their price $1995. I can't believe that they really expect anyone to drop that kind of money without providing more info/documentation about their product. Unfortunatly they do not seem to be alone in the word of Porsch modification. I refuse to do business with people that operate like that.

I have read an article in a Porsche and 911 World from about 6 months ago where a Swiss company did the exact sensor swap you refer to plus a free-flowing cat plus (I think) something to the ECU (all on a 3.2). They got about 25 hp (I think).

I can find it and try and scan it in if you like - reply to my email and/or here (email is better) - cameron.b@eudoramail.com.

Regards

I have hated the Bosch air flapper valve since my first experience with a 79 280ZX. Who needs a flapper valve that will always need adjustment with age and mileage, but is supposed to be unadjustable.

The single biggest reason I bought the 86 Carrera out of the several I drove was the Mass Air Flow Meter and different chip installed by the PO. The difference in torque and HP was noticable even to a rookie like myself. It is also noticable to others who have driven the car.

Great improvement to the car.

I had the flapper box replaced with a 993 MAF in my '72 911 with its 3.2L. My mechanic mated its sensor to a MoTec fuel and ignition electronic management system, used in place of the stock DME box. Intake and exhaust changes were also made, so its impossible for me to identify the changes from the MAF alone. The car's power and throttle response is greatly improved over the stock 3.2.

This is the article from 911 and Porsche World (from the UK) magazine. I am sure I am breaching plenty of copyright, so don't tell anyone.

See my post at the following URL. I didn't get many replies, and I haven't had a chance to call my friend who speaks German to give them a call either.
