Break-in oil
Hi all
Just completed rebuild of my 2.4E and have it back in car. Almost all hooked up and ready to be run. What is a good break-in oil and weight? should I use any additives? How many miles before changing it out? Then I was thinking BP 20/50 Thanks for any help Cheers Dan |

Brad Penn has a break in oil as well. I believe it is a 30 weight oil. Check there web site for info on it.

Just about any oil will work for the first break-in as the car will be started for the first time, run at 2k rpm for 20 minutes, then oil drained. A can of EOS or equivalent is a good idea here. After that, I prefer to do another change after each "run-in" trip. First run-in is about 5 miles, then change oil and check everything and run another 10 then more oil. After that, I do two 25 mile trips for second run-in with oil changes. You change more oil but the engine is cleaned out better from the initial wear-in and you feel better about it "lasting". While the oil is important here I feel the filter is even more important, get the best you can. The additive is important for the initial "cam-breakin" running as it helps lube the lobes well.
Once done, change at 100 and then again at 500 miles and 1000 miles on odometer from rebuild time. That timing is easy as you will be checking and/or retorquing parts at those points. Another thing to look for is rather than just adjusting the rockers at these intervals is to also pull one or two and give them and the cam lobes a good visual inspect to ensure they wore in right.

+1, BP has a 30w specifically formulated for break-in's...mysteriously called Brad Penn Break In Oil. Available at LN Engineering and The Oil Warehouse. Shipping to anywhere but the East Coast gets pricey. I lucked out and found a local distributor, I think he plays a banjo or washboard in a local band. ![]() Waiting for the day our host becomes our distributor for this stuff. ![]()
