Steering Wheel Fit?
A friend of mine needs a new steering wheel for his '73.5 911T Targa. Will the wheel from an '84 Carrera fit? I was thinking that it would - but not sure. Anyone? Thanks,

Nope! Sorry, but the depth is all wrong. You would need to replace the steering column to a 74 and later along with all the plastic shrouds around it. The splines are the same but you wouldn't be able to get the nut on and it would stick out too far. It's just plain different.

I am the friend of Aubrey's with the 73.5 911T Targa. I went ahead and bought it. If it will not fit I will just try to sell it. Thanks for the response's and whatever the outcome is I will post it so if there is someone else out there that is trying to do this they will know. ( Some say it will, some say it won't)

Tyson is so very right!!..
I bought a beautiful carrera wheel at a great price for my 71e. I ran down to the garage to put it on when the box arrived, and nearly lost it when it fit on the splines but would not allow the spline shaft to protrude enough to even get the washer and nut started. By the way...I busted the cancel plastic on that wheel because I was forceful. I've heard of guys taking the pre 74 type steering wheels, and hacking the hub part off..drilling the holes for the extension adapter...viola'....I'm just not that crafty. Good luck................ |

Well Brainiac and Tlook were right it will not fit. You both explained it exactly the way it fits. Well I guess I will try a momo with adapter. Thanks for the info!

Aubrey and John,
After saying what I did, I turned around, and 'made' a Evo Nardi work on my 71. Which, in turn, leads me to believe you can make any of them work once you Get the Hub off the early wheel. After removing the old wheel and putting it on my bench, I took a grinder to the rivet on the front and rear and punched them out...Viola!! Now you have the Hub...You still do not have the extension adapter that mates the wheel to the hub, but I was lucky, and the Nardi had it already. I even 'centered' it on the hub in a much better fashion than the crapy alignment idea thingy those italians were dreaming up. I can take pics if your interested. If you have the entire Carrera wheel, then you can do it. s |
