Keys For Locks
 

My door keys won't turn the locks on the glove or trunk handle. It would be very nice to be able to lock the trunk -- I could stowe my targa top and there wouldn't be much to steal in view (I have a sophisticated alarm that will help protect the car itself).

Anyone have advice on how to either (1) replace the glove/trunk lock mechanisms with new ones for which keys exist or (2) make keys for my existing locks?

I don't think it makes a heck of a lot of difference, but FYI, I have original push button door handles. It would just make it harder, I assume, to find replacement lock mechanisms so that all the keys match. Not a big issue -- I'd just like to have a key for the trunk even if it doesn't match my doors.

Any pearls of wisdom out there?

My belief is that you have the 'valet key' for your car -- it only works the door and the ignition. The good news is that the valet key and the normal key have the same keying pattern. All you need to do is have the valet key copied onto a standard key blank and bingo!! You have one key that fits all the locks.

Wait. I'm confused. Is there a key lock on an early 911 for the trunk?

My 67, 71 and 72 cars had locks on the trunk handle, but my 73 does not. Why that was deleted for the 73 model year is beyond me.

Perhaps the lock was an option - my 1973 911T has a lock on the T bar handle that connects to the front trunk lid.

I'd be very interested in people's replies here - all the locks on my ancient machine are different!

Yes the "t-bar pull" for the trunk is what I am talking about, although it is a round knob, not a t-bar like for the lid release. The round knob has a lock mechanism in the middle -- THAT is the one in question.

FWIW, my ignition key is different than my doors. They are both the same blank shape but the ignition is longer and cut to a different key pattern. Of course, neither fits the trunk release or the glove box.

Does anyone have a stock key for their early 911 glove or trunk release? Are they supposed to match the door keys or did the cars come with a distinct key for the glove and trunk release? Same key blank? If so, what length -- door length or ignition length?

I am keeping in mind that the '69 may be different than any other year, remembering that it has push button door handles -- and that the '69 has other odd quirks. Any other input would be useful reference, if not a solution.

Assuming you have the 'master' key and not just the 'valet' key, it is a rather simple (but time consuming) matter to rekey the locks. There is a tech article on the Pelican site about this. It does help to have a couple of donor locks for parts.

The ignition switch is probably the worst one to remove/reinstall, so you may want to leave that alone and rekey any others to match.

The key lock on the trunk release was standard on all Targas and Cabrios... and I have seen them retrofitted on standard Coupes but not sure if it was the factory or done over here.

Oops. The key blank for my trunk release handle doesn't match my door or ignition key. At least in this one respect it appears to be a FrankenPorsche! At least there aren't too many things like that from donor cars....

Looks like I will be buying a handle with key off of a '69 car being parted out -- good luck, right?

Raises the question ... were the push button door locks used on all 65-69?

Found this thread doing a search. On the 68 & 69 911s. Did any of them have the steering wheel lock mechanism? Or was this an added feature in the 70s? Thanks in advance.

PS My 68,71,72 911's didn,t have any lock for the front compartment.

My '72 has a locking pull for the trunk. I always thought I'd just get a blank & get a locksmith to key it if I ever got serious about it. By the way, there is a pair of chrome '69 door handles for sale on ebay right now. Maybe someone can use them or maybe the lock cylinders might help out.

My '69 has a locking steering mechanism. I have no reason to think it wasn't stock, although I can't confirm.
