Clearcoat on Fuchs Peeling
I posted this message over on the PCA-Potomac BBS but I think everyone is snoozing over there. No responses.
- I had my Fuchs wheel refinished at Ye Olde Wheel Shop one year ago. This is a local shop that specializes in high performance wheel refinishing, etc. - generally enjoys a very good reputation. Rather than having the rims polished, I opted for the lazyman's clearcoat, keeping the centers black, of course. - I just noticed, last week, while washing the car that the clearcoat is peeling off the wheel. Not little areas, but say 1 inch by 3 or 4 inche areas. - A bit surprised, I was! I would have thought that the clearcoat would have lasted for several years, rather than just 13 months. - Anyone else have experience with clearcoated wheels showing the same wear? I plan to call Ye Olde and see what they say. - chuck |

No direct experience with wheel refinishing, however, I have refinished every type of antique imaginable, houses, cars, you name it. Peeling, in my book, ALWAYS means poor prep! I have a bathtub that was painted and in order to make the paint adhere (guaranteed for 10 years) they had to use an acid etch. It is all in knowing what you are applying, and what surface characteristics are required of the surface being covered. Call Ye Olde and be firm.

That should certainly last for years unless subjected to harsh conditions. That shop has a good reputation . I am sure they will correct the problem

Sorry Chuck, they weren't snoozing, they could not believe the question. Clear coated Fuchs and that little turn-signal-oil-cooler-scoop thing will push you to the back of the Hershey caravan. I hadn't noticed the former travesty at the last DE, they passed the 50/49 test (50 feet/49 mph). Does Ye Olde Wheel Shop offer annodizing?
Also, three of the four posters so far from Potomac Region, this must be the annex? There is quite a bit more traffic here though. [This message has been edited by Alan Herod (edited 02-08-2001).] |

- Do you mean that clearcoated Fuchs is on par with clip-on ties? Hmmmmm. Perhaps I best think about the stuff I just ordered from JCWhitney - chrome trim for the wheel wells, chrome cups that go underneath the door handles, blue neon licence plate frame, two-foot wide racing stripe - etc. - You didn't notice the wheels at the last DE because I run track tires on a set of old BBS 3-piece - (three silver and one gold). - Still haven't called the wheel shop yet. soon. - I agree; this board has much more traffic, than Potomac's. Larger group of followers. |

This is only my opinion, but here it goes: A painted finish, especially the edge of the rim WILL go bad with time. The big thing with the fuchs is that they can be anodised, meaning no need to paint. I would get them anodised, like they were when new, and never worry again. GeorgeK |

Hey , What's wrong with Chrome wheel Trim. It makes the car look really shiny!
