Strange headlight switch failure
Just curious if that is a failure mode seen before.... No biggie...
83 SC, pull 1/2 way for city lights (get a green light on dash), pull all the way for headlights... Mine started not doing the city lights at a half pull, full pull works for headlights... yet when I pushed the switch back to the Off position again, the city lights would now come ON and I had no way to turn the lights off! I had to pull the battery cable for now, no time to troubleshoot... My first thought was that the knob was partially unscrewed and preventing full travel back to OFF but that is not it, and besides you can "feel" position 1 (city lights) as you pull on it, it just doesn't work there... Maybe an internal failure, similar to if the knob was unscrewed - plunger thing preventing pushing the switch fully off?... @ $193.50 + shipping, I'm going to see if I can pretend to fix it ;-) Just curious if someone else seen theirs fail like that and I am wasting my time! I've only ever seen them burn out... |
Just went through a similar situation with mine. I got a used one from a fellow Pelican and replaced it.

Me too. The switch is a cinch to pull out and replace. Just don't lose track of the dozen or so wires on the back of the switch. Good luck.

I recommend adding a headlight relay setup to help keep the load off that expensive switch.

That headlight switch is comical how much wiring goes into (and out) of it. Someone should post a picture of it.............
