Turbo Boxster
It's a good idea, I guess.

I don't know, Jack ... it still looks like its' lineage is from the Mitsu Eclipse family, not from the Stuttgart family! Generic styling just doesn't do much inspiring to my feelings!

saw that article the other day. I personally think boxsters are fantastic handling little cars, and add something over 300hp and I'd buy one!

okay,, if the boxter S uses a 3.2 that puts out 252hp and my Carrera is a 3.2 that only puts out 207 or thereabouts,,,, what is the difference in the boxter 3.2 and the my carrera 3.2??

I can't wait to see what the tuners do with it. The 911 is cooked if they can get a good 400hp turbo motor in there. The styling is still lame but I bet it will be a fun drive.

OK, so let me get this straight. You're predicting the demise of the 911 line after 35 years of arguably the most significant and long-lived evolution in motoring history because of a Boxster what?
The Boxster is the modern day 914, not that there's anything wrong with that. ![]() |

- Twice the valves - Your engine is strangled down to 207hp (Euro versions without worrying about so many emissions managed 231hp). Plenty of folk around here have investigated/changed to exhaust and MAF and chip to get more power. I have an article I scanned for someone getting 258hp from a 3.2 with similar modifications. They are pretty thin on details and it isn't clear if it applies to the 207hp cars or the 217hp cars or the 231hp cars. I have posted it (approx 2mb) to: www.angelfire.com/id2/cameronbaudinet The article is from a 911 and Porsche World (from the UK) and is a couple of months old. I am sure I am breaching plenty of copyright, so don't tell anyone. Cam [This message has been edited by CamB lotsa times.] [This message has been edited by CamB (edited 02-07-2001).] |

The 911 will die when doctors, lawyers, exec's etc... stop buying them! The factory will see this does not happen by continuously improving the 911 for these customers, not the second and third generation owners that predominately make up this board. Further they are careful not to make the starter car out perform their core line, i.e. a Boxter with the 3.4 in it would kick some 911 but at 3/4 the cost! but they want to reach more customers and if they can turbo charge the 2.7L engine at not much additional cost and then sell it for something like 80K to those people who don't want all the comfort of the 911 and can't find or afford a 996 turbo, they stand to make money!

the horsepower curve in that turbo boxster isn't a hill like most of our cars... it's ruler flat.
the scary part about that is it's a mid-mounted engine with those monsterous brakes. while we're all fighting for traction through Turn 2... he's coming out of the next chicane. i've seen the supercharged Boxsters, but the turbo one could be quite a monster. obin |

Personally, I think this is the wrong way to go with the Boxster line. A turbo model would push it into the Carrera price ranges. Why not a stripped down enthusists' model-Boxster CS?..Power accessories deleted, manual top, GT3 Seats, and a roll bar that would actually be usable for club events.

911Racer, I'm sure you could clear this up more clearly than to simply say it's BS. Heck, you could probably even upload some pictures of what's in store for us, Boxster-wise.

That picture is so obviously doctored it's unreal. I was thinking that even before Stef posted. I'll believe it when Porsche announces it.
They wouldn't show a new product like this for the first time (on a public road) before unveiling it at an auto show or press conference...see the Carerra GT... ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 The Porsche Owners Gallery |

Unfortunately, a large number of these buyers are not gearheads like most of us and will accept anything, as long as it says "Porsche" on it and costs big bucks! These cars are merely used as status symbols and not "wheels"! Believe me, I know - I'm a lawyer! The writing is on the wall.
The Boxter will inherit the sports car mantle(deservedly so ) and the 911 will continue its morph into a Lexus like GT cruiser until Porsche AG decides to get back to some good old fashioned ass-kicking . Really, the souped up Bimmer (M) beats a Porsche on the track , skid pad, etc.? It's enough to make me puke. Stef - you have to save our future purchases!!!!!!!! Boxter the modern 914. Heck no. The Boxter is waterjacketed, and therefore not nearly as cool as a 914.

The Boxster is great for what it is, but will not fill the exotic hole like the 996 does. A Boxster is marketed to compete against the Z3, CLK, Vette, and generic ricer hi-pow knock offs. Where in my opinion the Boxster is the best of bread here.
Now once you get into the exotics like the 996 TT it becomes a different story. Car & Driver just did a story in the current issue on the 996 TT Tiptronic. They liked the car, but agreed with RAS911 that it is becoming so tame and issolated that you loose the driving charm of a ball-to-the-wall sports car. If I shell out the money I want something that will snarl and bark when I hit the gas. I am sorry but for the exotic market the 996 TT takes the back seat in style, function, and sound to the Ferrari Modena 360 with the paddle F1 shifter, IMHO. Now the new GT2 may be a different story with 2 wheel drive and factory delete of the comfort crap. ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |

I'm curious: which BMW's would those be that kick the 911's on the track? Because I was at a little out-of-the-way track called Daytona down south somewhere last weekend. I watched 911 GT3R's kick BMW's ass for 24 straight hours.
Deal in facts. |
