Re-keying ignition barrels

hi all

i just bought a 964 which had its ignition barrel replaced some years ago. as a result, i have one key for the ignition and another for the doors/glove box etc.

does anyone know what is involved in getting the ignition barrel to work with the original key? is this something a locksmith could do?

i hate keys in general and would love to return this to a "one key" car.

The need new tumblers for either the door or the ignition. I have done the door, never the ignition. the key slides into the tumbler and the height of the tumbler plus the key 'depression' has to be right for the key to rotate. There is one tumbler for every 'notch' in your key.

A locksmith will fix it if you take the lock to him, assuming he can get tumblers for a Porsche.

There are other less palatable options, filing or removing tumblers to make the ignition key work in the door etc.

My suggestion is an ignition key and an after-market remote for the door locks.

One of the projects in Wayne's 101 book is about re keying door locks... (Match your ignition key)

I haven't done it but it looks fairly straight forward.

If you have the extra pins handy, it is a very easy job. It just takes time and patience to get it just right.

I removed the ignition and had a locksmith rekey it to the doors key. $50.

thanks guys. i spoke to an auto locksmith who can do it. i will remove the ignition myself and give him the key i want him to cut it to.

why the PO didn't do this is beyond me. i've only had the car a few days and the dual keys is driving me nuts.
