78-79 930's. The good and bad?
I'm 17 and own a 85.5 944. I would love to have a 911 but the budget doesn't fit at all, BUT my dad has loved the 78-79 930's since the day they came out. He would like to buy one but around my area there hard to find and usually they want a lot for them. What is the average price they normally go for with lows miles and in good-excellent condition? Also what are soom good and bad things about these year Turbo's?

Well, as I'm sure you know, those were the first years that they made the turbos. From what I understand they were no different looking except for the slightly different whale tail. If you don't mind me asking, considering the only slight asthetic difference, what is it that makes this model so attractive to you dad?
Anyhow, to answer your question, the downside of the early turbo was that it was only 3.0 L and that there was no intercooler. Also, from what I hear, they (just like most of the turbos) have very scarry lag. I'm no expert but i'm sure that someone on this board will know better than myself. I'm 19 and I bought my own 1978 911 when I was 18. All with my own money (and a little help from the bank) but no funding from the folks... Its deffinetly doable but you have to want it bad enough. Good luck, Adam Roseneck 1978 911 SC (kinda in pieces for the winter) |

atr: sorry to correct you, but he's talking about the 78-79 turbos. The 76-77 turbos are the 3.0 liter ones without intercooler. 78-79 models have an intercooler and are 3.3 liters. 78-79 turbos are the same as the 80-88 turbos expect for the exhaust and a couple other minor updates over the years. The 76-77 turbos had the different whale tale. Turbos from 78-89 looked the same except for the type of headlight sprayers they used.
The 78-79 turbos are great cars with good power and they weigh less than the later turbos. The bad things about them are the old tensioners and the thermal reactors. Look for a car that has had these things updated. Get it checked out by a mechanic that's knowledgeable about these cars. You should be able for find a good one for 25k. Keith 79 930 |

I'm not really sure why he like's them so much? He likes those better then even the new 911's. Like the 996 and 993 Turbo's. He grew up with the 78-79 style and has always loved them. A little while back there was a 78 930 in pretty good condition and they wanted way to much, asking $34,000 for it. Thanks for the info so far though. Keep it coming.
