Question MK or Monty

I'm getting SSI heat exchangers installed on my stock 3.0 litre SC. I'm not sure which muffler to use.

Any input will be appreciated.

Brian

I'm biased. M&K. On top of being a quality product Ben's customer service is something every business should strive for.
Sound, fit, looks, and a bit more umph, well here's a pic...

Good luck in your decision. But talk to Ben at least.

MK vs Monty

I have had both. Personally, I feel the MK is the best muffler made. I agree that Ben does provide the best customer service. Plus, his prices are unbeatable. The Monty cost me around $1100. The Monty's sound is not any better than the MK and the Monty's quality may be slightly less than the MK.
Regards, Mark

I recently bought a M&K from Ben, he was very helpful, held my hand until I decided to go with a 1 in, 1 out with stock HE's and CAT. I like the sound, I have about 300 miles on the muffler, it has a nice throaty sound, but by no means obnoxious.

Brian when you get your SSI's and you take them out of the box you will be amazed on how nicely built they are, the welds are perfect, they are exhaust art. When you order and receive your M&K muffler you will have the same feeling, Ben builds exhaust art. Great muffler, fantastic welds, lightweight and sounds great. In my opinion SSI's and M&K are made for each other. I have a 2 in 2 out on my 83SC with SSI's and I have already purchased a 2 in 2 out for my 914 with 3.0 and headers. Good luck with your choice.

Mark,
Could you post another pic of the muffler from under?
Ben, Is this a production model?
TIA

I have a 1-in, 1-out M&K that I just installed on my Carrera 3.2L. Dealing with M&K was awesome - Ben took lots of time answering my questions - and the muffler arrived promptly. It's beautifully made and fit perfectly.

I'm biased toward M&K specifically because of sound, which is a very subjective thing indeed. Many aftermarket exhausts have a deep, basso profundo bellow to them, which I don't personally like. AT idle they rumble away, and then under load they resonate and boom. That bugs me - I feel cheesy driving a car like that. But the M&K sounds different. It has a slightly higher-pitched, mechanical sound - more like the early mechanical injected cars. At idle and lower RPM it sound very mature - very stock. But at high load and higher RPM is starts wailing in that very classic Porsche way. It's hard to make a 3.2L sound like an old RSR, and although the M&K doesn't go THAT far, it's more in that vein than in the "small-block Chevy" vein.

I dig it. I kept the stock muffler in place for a long time because I don't like the sound of most aftermarket mufflers, but I've very glad I got this one. Classic Porsche.

No not exactly but we do them from time to time for customers.. Mark and I worked together on this one and it was pretty straight forward.. Just had to ship twice as the end user gets to place and mark, position the tail pipes to there liking then send it back for final welding..

Oh and by the way guys thanks for the feed back always need that to improve if need be..

Brian good luck with your search. you have picked the 2 best choices IMHO..

Tim,
The car is in a shop right now. I could take a picture of it but the exhaust wouldn't be hooked up to the engine. Would that be ok? If not I will when I get her back.

Mark,
No big hurry, just wanted to see the clearances and such. Please wait till you get it back,I'll subscribe to this thread. Are just the tips polished?

Ben,
Did you save the setup from Marks,? Mine is an SC and I really like that look.

OK, sounds good. Yes I just had the tips polished. In hindsight with the polishing I did to the fan & housing afterwords, along now with the engine coming out so I can spruce things up I would have had the whole muffler done. Of course I could always do it myself now. hmmm.. I just may.
If Ben doesn't have the measurements I could always do that for you on mine.

M&K came out of nowhere and mostly reduced the muffler choice to a herd of high testerone technical males to either it or Monty.

Gotta jump in for M+K. Best muffler. Best service. I drove my car the other day for the first time since late Fall. Forgot how great the latest generation 2 in 1 out sounds. It's intoxicating without a hint of resonance.

Thanks for all the input. I'm leaning toward the MK 2 in 2 out.

The Monty is very expensive nowadays. However, it is proven not to lose any hp.

I have not seen much if anything in the way of dyno tests on the mk. It is ~2 lbs lighter than the Monty.

there is a huge variety's of response there. But can tell you that NO muffler will gain you more then 4-5 hp.. it is mostly done with headers/premufflers etc. what different mufflers do is open up to build upon example specific to carreras where fuel and timing maps can be changed to improve performance with the addition of a free flow muffler and headers/premuffler/bypass

Steve wongs website has some dyno data 911chips.com interesting to say the least.

Mufflers will take away HO is some ranges unless the car is tuned for the secific application Much like the MFI muffler myth.. I talk with engine builders all the time and that is kind of a running joke with all of them about the MFI muffler being the only one that works with MFI cars.. gotta tune it to the new exhaust..

i cant vouch for the M&K but i can say that i've had 2 Montys and couldnt be happier. Fit & finish is first class and they sound awesome!

they are getting a bit expensive in the US though with the depreciation of the $ against ours
