What size tires for Autocross?
Hi everyone,
I have a question for those Solo II/Autocrossers out there. I have a 72 911T that I am preparing to autocross this summer, and need your opinions and experiences concerning tires. I have a set of 15's that came stock on the car with brand new Yokohama 509's on them; my thought was to buy an additional set of wheels to have dedicated to autocross events. I located and bought a beautiful straight set of OEM Fuchs, 6X7X16, thinking that I could wrap some Kumhos on them and be set. Now the problem: Kumho V700's come in a 225/50zr16 PERFECT!!! for the rear; now I just need to order a set of 205/55 or 50zr16 for the front, PROBLEM!!! Kumho doesn't make one in that size, argh! Now what do I do? Please advise with your personal experiences thank you, chris collier collier@iglou.com |

I'm using Yokohama AVS Sports in those exact sizes. Yoke also makes their AVS Intermediates, about half the price of the Sports, in those sizes.
I got fantastic traction on asphalt last fall with the Sports. ------------------ Mark Szabo 1986 911 Targa 3.2 1987 Escort 5-speed 1.9 The Porsche Owners Gallery |

I have a 72 911T prepared for auto x. Having two sets of wheels\tires is the best way to go if you still drive on the street. In my region though having 16" rims on a car that comes stock w\15" will change your class. If that doesn't bother you I say go for it. I run kuhmo's Victoracer in the front and yoko's Ao32r's in the rear. This gives more traction in the front to combat understeer. This set up works great for me with adj swaybars frt and rear, comp spring plates,28 rear and 22 fr torsion bars, camber bar;adj koni shocks, solid motor mounts, lowered about 4", poly bushings all around etc, etc... Have fun

Depends on how your gearing works out for you on autoX courses...i.e. do you have to come out of 2nd on straights or do you have plenty of room in 2nd on most parts? If you have room, why not stay in the stock class with 15" rims and go with something like 205/ 50 ZR 15 BFG G-Forces (if you can afford them) The smaller diameter will give you a sleight advantage in overall gearing

If you are just learning to autocross, don't worry about it and just learn the car. Sticky tires means you will be going faster when you loose it. If you don't get a little out of control every now and then you are not goin fast enough.
Otherwise Kumho and Hoosier are it as far as competitive autocross tires. BFG has ceased production. ------------------ Jeff Parker 72t |

I want to thank everyone for their responses, and want to thank Jack for showing me a link that completely has overwhelmed me, Thanks Jack.
Anyway, this is what I need to know, from those who can honestly say they have done it!! on a 16X6 rim, mount a Kumho 225/50zr16 tire, which will be mounted to the front of my narrow bodied 72 911T on a 16X7 rim, mount a Kumho 245/45zr16 tire, which will be mounted to the rear of my narrow bodied 72 911T Will it work? Will it rub? thanks everyone for their patience with a new 911 owner, ME ![]() chris ------------------ chris collier collier@iglou.com 72 911T (RS wannabe) |
