Front strut tower braces
This doesn't look good.
Obviously someone, at sometime, addressed something with these. It looks to me like it was a patch job and a bad one at that. Is it time to weld some new ones in? ![]() ![]() |

I don't see anything wrong in those pics. There is no strut tower brace.

Sorry, wrong termonology: I guess I meant top strut mount & support plate(s).
Tar is there for what reason? If they're OK than alls good. It just looked as if it was a little beat up and someone tried to fix it. |

Tar is factory applied. It's to prevent water from entering the trunk, around the camberplate.

If I had to guess, its there as a corrosion inhibitor. Given the potential for metal flex & vibration, tar is more likely to maintain a water tight seal compared to paint.
Of course I'm pulling this out of my butt so if I'm wrong someone please speak up. Edit - or Chuck can get in before me and confirm my guess ![]()

Thanks gents. I still don't like that lip though. Maybe I'll take a closer look when I put new struts in.

That should be of no consequence. Honestly.

A bit weird that LHS is somewhat cleaned up, but RHS is still completely tarred.

I made an appointment with an "older" possibly crabby Porsche specialist for an alignment
and he did mention that the more tar he has to remove around the support plates the more my alignment would cost me... lol They're as smooth as a baby's butt now !!! Yes, mine looked just like Mickey's !

Less brakes, more gas!

Best tar removal method? Various chemicals and elbow grease? Just like gaskets? or is there some magical anti-tar-matter that can be applied?

A heat gun works great to soften the goop. Then scrape it off.
It's standard procedure to remove some of this stuff when performing an alignment.

Wurth Cleans-All is good after the heat gun.

yeah, mine has it all over both. I wonder why one side has been cleaned up. I would think both would have been cleaned if there was a strut brace at one time. Honestly, I am sure it not a big deal, just kind of strange.
