I have an 87 930 and was wondering if the factory put clear coat on the paint? Was doing the Clay bar ( wow does this work especialy on the glass ) and polish thing and came to the part of clear coat or not. Also heard of a "mock clear " , paint and clear mixed, was told when buffing wax if you get paint color on the rag - then you have no Clear Coat, any body know anything about this stuff?
Thanks |

Wax will only leave colour if it removes any paint. Most waxes don't have any cutting component so will not do this.
If it is a metallic, you can count on it being a base/clear. I have no idea what they did with solid colours like black or red or white. Something you could do is get some FINE sand paper that's a different colour than your paint and lightly scuff a spot in an area that is not visible such as the inside of your hood or decklid. If it comes up white (assuming your car is not white) it is cleared. If it is similar to your car, then it is not cleared. Using a cut polish will give you the same results. Even taking a terry cloth and rubbing firmly on the paint will pull some of it off and transfer the colour to the cloth if it is not cleared. Again, do it in an inconspicuous area to avoid rub marks on the paint.

IIRC, Porsche didn't start using clear coat on non-metallics until 1995.
