H-4s, Sugar Scoops and glass covers
Car is a 74 with sugar scoops and aftermarket Euro Cibie H-4s.
Anyone know of a way to fit some kind of glass cover at the front of the headlight rim to make it look like a real H-4? A while back there was a thread, begun I think by Bob Tilton though I can't find it now, exploring whether you could put VW or 356 or other early headlight glass on an SWB. He found a way, but my sense was that it wouldn't work on a later car. Any insight appreciated.

The headlights from a 67 911S or the 912 is the best fit. While the VW or 356 headlights do fit they have a much more rounded trim profile that you may not find aesthetically pleasing. These lights also require modification to change the the mounting points. This involves removing the mounting tab and drilling a hole to mount in a 911 headlight bucket.

Jamie, thanks but I'm confused. Will any 912 headlight fit a 911, or just an early one? Is there glass in the 912 unit, or is it just that it can be added?

What Jamie is referring to in the 67 911/912 headlight is the glass covering on the unit that you like. Yes, any 912 headlight will fit a 911, but Porsche changed the US lights to sugar scoops in 68 that's why the early lights were suggested. You can find them on eBay, the Samba, and on the for sale forum, from time to time.

Now that you know what you need, start your hunt as it may take awhile. I just did a quick search and didn't find any currently for sale, but if you advertise a "Want to buy" in the parts forum for 911/912 65-67 headlights, you may get lucky. Cruise the typical places: eBay, the Samba, Craigslist, 912 registry, as well as reading all ads for early cars being parted out. Good luck and if I come across something soon, I'll forward it on to you.

Thanks much. I'll start my hunt. One last question. I assume all I need is the rim, whatever holds the glass in, and the glass if I'm lucky, and NOT the mechanism which actually holds the bulb and allows its adjustment? Though quite possibly I'll have to buy the whole thing.
