changing fuel filter
Does anyone know of any annoying quirks that I may run into changing the fuel filter in my 77 Carrera? Looks like a straight swap..
If there's one thing I've learned it's that these beasts get pissed when you tinker with their innards. Thanks, Pete |

The easiest way to get these things off is to heat them up with a propane torch...hehe jk.
Seriously, I would go to sears and buy the flare nut wrenches that fit your filter, it's not worth screwing around with rounded off nuts. I always make my own flare nut wrenches by buying standard open/closed end then cutting a section out of the closed end. This is a pretty straightforward changeout, if your is like mine (CIS). Couple of tips: Put a thick rag underneath. About three gallons of gasoline drains out of that pint-sized filter. Not really, but it seems like it.
also, and forgive me if this is basic, but you can place the wrenches on the fitings so that you can simply squeeze them together with one hand to loosen them. I don't use flare nut wrenches for this and confess I have never seen a 19mm flare nut wrench, but making my own sounds like a solution. I have simply used open end wrenches. I believe you need two 19mm and one 17mm. Or a 17 and a 19 and a crescent wrench. ------------------ '83 SC |

I used the Flare nut wrenches that I got at Sears, after I found out I did not have the correct size.

The Craftsman metric flare-nut wrench set I got in the mid-'70s has a 19 mm x 22 mm wrench in it. And, I have never used it ... ever! But, I'll be ready if I ever find any flare-nut fittings that size!

Loosen the gas cap before taking off the filter: it will release some of the pressure on the system & you'll lose less gas. Use thin teflon tape (two turns) on the nuts before reassembling.

With my '78's CIS I made sure to turn the ignition on and gently put upward pressure on the CIS plate to prime the filter. This simply means you are not turning the car over to prime. A little does fine: I listen for the priming to cycle down and stop.
I also put the installation date on the gas filter. Jw |

Thanks guys.. I wasn't too sure about priming it.. I've read that to prime the injectors you need to press the airflow sensor until you can hear the injectors hum.
I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it... Pete |
