Easy one (for some): What does RUF mean?
 

Reading past threads, I thought RUF was a type of wheel, maybe a body modification, or some other enhancement. But every now and then I see one pop up that are different years, and look, well, different!

What is or does RUF mean?

Ruf is a German company named after its founder Alois Ruf. To call them tuners wouldn't do them justice. They are regarded as a manufacturer in their own right in Germany and have close links with the Porsche factory. I think I'm right in saying that Porsche give Ruf cars to test and modify even before they are released to the general public.

The most famous(legendary?!)of their coversions is the 'Yellow Bird' 911 Turbo, which redefined the term 'fast' when introduced, and held the Nurburgring lap record for some time.

A couple people have told me that a C2 Yellowbird still holds the lap record at the N-ring.

I heard if you buy a genuine RUF the manufacturer (make) of car on your registration says RUF instead of Porsche.

The current lap record for for road legal street cars:
7,44,06 = 161 km/h Gemballa GTR Biturbo 600HP, Horst von Saurma, Sport Auto, 2000.

"Ruf Automobile GmbH has been certified by the German government as an original automobile manufacturer since 1981. In 1987, Ruf Automobile GmbH also became became an approved manufacturer with the U.S. authorities for safety and emissions (NHTSA and EPA)."

Not quite as elaborately as Porsche itself (which got its start raiding the VW parts bins), Ruf buys parts from Porsche, and then assembles "better" Porsches for the high-speed niche market occupied by most tuners. Ruf just takes it a step further than most tuners, and enjoys a good relationship with Porsche (sort of like AMG does with Mercedes and BMW), but gets its own manufacturer's badging, like Brabus does with Mercedes.

Thanks to RUF there are P-cars on Playstation GT 2.
Presumably Porsche refused to give a licence because of (then) oncoming NSF Porsche Challenge. The way round this problem was to have a selction of RUF cars instead!

We're not talking about sweet here, we're talking about absolutly incredible. And even at that, its an underestimate. They are, however, unbelievably expensive. I'm thinking of doin a RUF body conversion to my 78 SC when I rebuild it but the cost in very prohibitive. They are beautiful machines. Gotta go before I get all excited and stuff...
