I love Tom Sharpes

Yesterday I spent about 2 hours reading through Toms home page (again) and I still get a kick out of it.
About a year ago his article on targa top restoration led me to performing a top restoration of my own.
Then I ended up removing and painting my roll bar like he described as well.
Then I got to thinking about how cool it'd be to reverse my wiperblades. Did it and like it alot.
Now that I am rebuilding my motor I'm going to take some of the hints and tips from Tom from detailing his engine.
Also, far down the road, after I have my car back together, I have planned on restoring my interior including the carpeting, seats and interior panels. Tom has alot of cool money saving tips and ideas that I'm gonna try.
While my car is down and I can't spend a whole hell of alot of money, I'm thinking about maybe starting up a couple small side projects to keep myself occupied and do a couple of improvements that I would normally put off since it would require a bit of down time. Now I don't really have a choice.
I'd like to paint my calipers,
detail the empty engine bay,
and maybe even rebuild my pedal box.

The trick of course is to not get "so" involved with so called "side projects" that before you know it you've got the car totally apart and are more less into a complete restoration. I'm going to have to be carefull not to get into that boat.
Anyway, I want to thank Tom for all of the effort he has put into his page and for all of the cool editorials and step by step procedures that made me comfortable enough to attemp these things. And anybody else who hasn't seen his page needs to check it out!

Oh, and Tom,...I'm still waiting to see a couple pics of your new C2!

Yeah Leland, I know which boat your're talking about. Time to work on projects always seems to be a problem. I started taking my '72 911 apart almost two years ago. Right now it's completely disassembled & up on stands in my driveway. I'm redoing the brakes, suspension, paint, interior, engine, etc. Right now, the only thing completed is the motor. Some of the body panels are currently in the process of being prepped, & I've rebuilt the brakes. I could drive my 912, but right now I'm in the process of putting a new interior in it. Will I (we) ever learn ???

Well, I'm sure a little SWEPCO on those wheels and other moving parts made it so much the better! Yeah, Tom's got a great site - I think I may recover my Targa this spring and refer to his site, which is really well detailed on the steps.

Type "A" personalities are good for this sort of thing - wish I had one like Tom's....

What's this business about reversing wiper blades? I assume you mean that you have them blocking the lower windshield on the passenger side instead of the drivers side(?)
when in the "off" position. If this is the case, I'd like to know more. I still don't understand why most German cars leave the blade resting against the windscreen on the drivers side. I looked at Toms sight but didn't see anything about this.

Thanks for the help.

Maybe I should clarify things a little. The site that has all of the projects that I did with my 74 Targa is at :

http://members.rennlist.com/5150targa

(it is in Orange County somewhere - so if anyone sees it let me know! The plate is still 1 KOOL 74 )

Since I sold the car and bought the 1990 C2 I haven't had as many projects to do, but I still have set up a new site for the C2 at:

http://members.rennlist.com/myc2

I will be putting links on it to projects I have been sending to Wayne to post on the Pelican Technical Articles area so that you can enlarge the pix. I still have the gauge face, lowering & wing installation stories to get done but I got side tracked by the JACK !

I left the other one (the 74 site) up because in the year and a half I have had it up I have had 8600 hits on it ! So I hope it has served it's purpose of being a guide to all of you out there that you can see that if I can do it - it can't be all THAT hard !

When I first bought my car I found the Pelican site and Rennlist (then PorscheList) and they were invaluable to me in learning about my car.

A site that I found particularly helpful was Poorman's Porsche at

http://www.myler.org/PoorMansPorsche

I learned from that site that you CAN do the work yourself and you don't have to run to the dealer everytime something goes wrong.

I hope everyone continues to share their aquired knowledge with the newcomers as well as the established people on this list because it will add considerably to the enjoyment of your car - whatever year or model you have.
