Gas Flapper Story

So I need to know if there is a gas flapper upgrade for my 69.

I was driving down the New York Thuway yesterday after just filling up with gas. I went to exit on a wide two lane 240 degree off ramp. The outside lane was clear so I downshifted to pass a few cars in the inside lane doing about 70 mph. When I came upon a Honda in the outside lane, I cut to the inside to pass. Just passing the Honda, my back end suddenly broke loose forcing me to steer into the slide to keep from spinning. At first I thought I had blown a tire but the car regained grip and tracked true. My second thought was that I had broken a sway bar link. Then I got to thinking that I must have forced some gas up the filler tube and out the overfill tube when I cut to the inside lane. Gas dripping onto the asphalt would have certainly caused this situation. It certainly caused me to wet my pants.

Anyway, what did the factory come up with to keep gas off the road way. There must be some gas flapper that keeps the fuel from going up the filler tube, no?

search on emissions

do another on fule vapor

you should have 1 or 2 plastic tanks for fuel overflow & vapor

you may want to retrofit to a MY later than '69 also...

Randy,

I have the vapor recovery box underneath the cowl that had deteriorated hoses on it last year so I replaced them. Keeps the smell out most of the time. I remember now that later cars had an overflow tank down near the battery. I suppose I could add the later system. My pants would end up less soiled.
