77 Wiring harness help
Hey guys... I am pretty far along on this project. I need some help with the re-wiring of a 77 harness (in a 74 chassis).
The wiring harness is complete. Can anyone recommend a good person who I can hire to come to my house and help me with this? I already have had Tom Amon come by for the motor. He DOESN'T do wiring - he said in those words... so I am stuck. I have to resolve mainly the FRONT wiring (motor and rear is basically DONE) I have the front lights wired correctly, and the windshield wipers and fresh air ready. The parts I need most help with is the guages. I can probably get the CLOCK right! ![]() I just need to know if anyone has a car far enough apart (the stuff like fresh air blower and so forth that is removed enough that I can take photos of them and be able to match what I have. I imagine the harness is about the same between 75 - 83 or so... That would REALLY help me if someone had a car torn down to the same level, then I could get highly detailed photos, and rewire my car in a hurry. I need to get this sucker re-wired in about 7 days. (1 day per gauge with a few to spare. Thanks for anything you can do. IF YOU HAVE PHOTOS - by all means send them. What I really need are GOOD photos of the FUEL/TEMP and OIL-PRESSURE gauges, pulled out the front, and photos taken to show the wire colors on a 77 911 S. I would pay to have someone do that for me. Paypal first, then send photos. If that sounds like something you can do... let me know. IF you are ANYwhere near SACRAMENTO, please let me know and I'll drive to you... and get good shots.

You may want to take a look at the wiring diagrams here to see if they help:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/911_electrical_diagrams.htm I also have a '77, so let me know if you need any additional pictures. Frank

Nathan,
you can swing by and we can remove each guage out of my 78 noting the hook ups if you like and pics for reminders. Or bring your gauges and will mark them with color codes. Tim

You can get a haynes manual and it has the proper wiring diagrams for a 77 in it unfortunately the wiring here on pelican are either earl (73) or for the SC which is close but has differences I have been there and if you get a diagram and have patience you will prevail.

Thanks TIM. I will do that sometime this week or weekend. I think I have most of it figured out. There is basically ONE sender or gauge wire per instrument (example Oil Pressure) that matters, the rest is common (ground which is brown) and red for postives --- which are daisy chained... then there is the illumination chain. It looks really complicated until you break it down into basic functions. The only thing I need to know for sure is what color wires (like WHT/GRN) goes on what gauge. Then I am home free on most of it. The nice thing is that the fuse box is un- molested, and the rear portion is also even simpler since I have the MSD unit now.
It's coming along nicely. I'll post more pictures tonight. I am looking for a backdated DRIVER SIDE Heater Tin for the engine. Other than that... I am almost ready to start up this bad-boy. I am trying to not get too excited, because there will probably be set-backs -as there usually is. The Injection looks nice though. I will post pictures of that soon too. Cheers!

Thats absolutely right when I originally built my car and was laying out the harness one pesky problem took me 3 days and 2 cases of beer to track down turned out to be a small short up in the depths of the harness surrounded by good wires.

I noted that you have a MSD to use in your '77 My tach would not work properly till North Hollywood speedometer changed circuitry inside the tach, then it worked beautifully. The needle used to bounce a lot. I tried the MSD tach adapter and that didn't work . NH told me that the tach would eventually burn out if I did not modify the internals.
Good luck,Walter

Another big question.
Does anyone have any experience with wiring the headlight switch? It is a little intimidating and I am not sure how it goes together. There is a large circle of connectors and a small one. Is there a simple way to know which wires go to the inside and which go on the outside? i figure one ring in and one is out... and it simply modifys the 'on' state of the lights / parking and dims the dome lights. Do I have that about right? Other than that I think I can figure out the gauges. they are basically illumination, postive, and negative and one sender wire per instrument. I know the ones I need are Oil Press, Oil temp, Generator (green illuminated) and red key on... plus tach would be nice (black+Purple). Those are the ones that are super important. I also need to hook up the brake light switch, fuel pump (recently identified) and a few others. I know I have the front lights/parking lights, and the rear lights all done. The next thing is to get the instruments done, and the fuel pump. then I'll make sure there are no stray wires un- accounted for... (so I get NO shorts) and then connect it up and watch it close... then if I get the correct lights, no smoke, and everything works ok. I will see about the motor. It's done. ready to go in. The Fuel system, Oil System, brakes and suspension are basically done. The only thing I have left is the electrical. The rest is just cosmetics. I have the interior in good hands. It'll be mostly done next week. Check out my progress on the site ( http://www.74911RS.com/ ) Thanks for stopping by!

On the headlight switch you can use the sc harness on pelican as I think most of the color codes are the same and its plug and chug the wires in by the numbers its not as bad as it looks. If you run into a conflict look at the 73 harness also to try to work it out if you still have a conflict post the color codes and I will dig out my 77 dia. and help you out.
