1974 & 1975 Carrera's HELP

I run a 1975 Carrera (whale tail) and a friend a 1974 Carrera (duck tail). Both decklids are factory and both deck lid grills are plastic. I thought they were BOTH supposed to be metal, black anodized. Can anyone shed light as to the authenticity of these grills? When did they go to plastic?

I can't answer your question directly, but I can add my '74 duck tail has the black metal grill.

JHinOH - is yours painted black or anodized black?

carrera turbo - could this elude to the fact maybe 1975 was the first years of plastic?

It appears anodized, and it's actually aluminum. Definitely not plastic though, it uses 8mm nuts to attach to the fiberglass tail underneath.

yes i would say this is the first year for plastic as i thought about it and remember seeing a 74 with the alloy or metal gril but it was not black so maybe an add on? but im pretty sure all 75s came with the plastic.

cheers ed

JHinOH - did you buy your 74 new or did you buy it from the original owner? Trying to determine what a 1974 Carrera SHOULD have.

Nope, neither sorry. I did have someone familiar with restoration on these indicate the tail appeared factory. I've owned it 10 years and got it in very "original" shape (read lots of money and work slowly refreshing it) and it had a lot of correct 74 Carrera stuff on it like thicker 3 spoke steering wheel, s calipers, correct engine/trans, original seats, original Fuchs, etc. so I would take a guess and say that is the correct grill for the '74 as everything else on the car was stock.

All the 1974 911s, including the Carrera, used the metal grill. I'm not sure when the grills were changed to plastic, but it was definitely after the 1974 model year.
