Engine News
Hi everyone,
Well, now I'm in the US (NYC) for 3 weeks and my car is at home in the UK. Some might remember, I had poor running problems and found I'd very low compression in 3 cyls. A reputable Porsche shop has stripped down my heads and found servere guide/valve wear - he thought they had been cut too thin in the past and it was generally a mess. To be sure, I'm having a friend go in to "check" what's going on and report back to me, as I'm away. Is this the common 2.7 valve wear? The pistons, rings and headstuds are all OK, but is it worth timeserting the crankcase anyhow? The engine has 60,000 miles on it. I'm not sure if that is the usual wear on those engines, but I do know that VERY early valve guide wear is very common in those beasts.
As for the timecert/helicoil question, I would say DEFFINETLY! You are right at the line for the average miles before rebuild it required. If its in the budget you should conder doing the case too. The other guys will surely correct me if i'm wrong, but I think the cases are prone to pull or shift too. Check it out and save the hassel of having to crack it again in a few weeks/months/years. Anthony,
Yes, most definitely get the Time-Serts done now while they have the heads off, and have them check to see if the bottom row of head studs are Dilivar ... and if they are have 12 plain steel studs put back in! And, be sure to have the shop check that the top compression ring clearance is still within spec. If it isn't, then new pistons are needed, maybe some USA-made JEs with 9.5:1 compression, assuming your cylinders are Nikasil. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
