Anyone ever rebuilt later style chain tensioner?

PCNA has backordered Carrerra tensioner update kits since November with no ETA. Pelican has the listed as NLA. It seems the left side is available from PCNA but not the right. While awaiting the kit, I thought I might rebuild the existing left side tensioner. It doesn't look too complicated and hopefully all parts are available. Has anyone done this? The Haynes manual gives a good exploded view of the components. When these tensioners fail, what is the primary component failure..."O" rings or weakened springs? All advice appreciated

I rebuilt mine last winter. I should mention that these are out of an '83, so they are the best of the non-carerra tensioners. It wasn't to bad, took a couple of hours to do. The parts that showed wear on mine were the o-rings. I don't plan on replacing the tensioners any time soon so I installed a set of hydra-locks too. One thing to remember is that there is some spring tension on the tensioner, so when you take the cir-clip off the top make sure you catch all the pieces. It may look simple in your manual but those pieces would be hard to find on a garage floor.

Pmac, thanks..another question, were you able to buy a rebuild kit or did you have to order each individual part? How much are we talking about?

You can buy kits with all of the parts you need. I bought mine from Performance Products, a kit for one tensioner was about $30.

You must have missed my reply earlier to another tensioner post. Anyway, I just completed my upgrade last weekend. I ordered the upgrade kit from Performance Products a little over two weeks ago. It arrived in three days. I think they have some. Have you checked?
