Advice on Dropping Front Spindles

Any experience regarding dropping front spindles on a 911 strut. Wheer to grind through the welds, where not to grind, re welding, addtional bracing and steering alignment after.

Thanks in anticipation.

Are you prepping the car for the Baja 500? Transyberia?

Folks usually want to raise the spindles, not drop them.

You can raise the Bilstein strut spindles, because the main strut tube is a constant diameter. Grind the welds, raise it up, reweld. While you are at it, why not weld in some reinforcing tabs, as the factory did for the RSRs.

The Boge spindles really can't be raised. For some reason the housing tube is necked down at the bottom, and the spindle is at the top of the neck. You'd have to machine the ID of the spindle to get it to fit. Come to think of it, maybe that would work. I'd not want to turn the tubing down.

While it is easy to say "grind/drill out the welds and move the spindle," I think a big press might help. My "beat it with a hammer" methods resulted in the ball joint mounting piece being smashed to uselessness. I didn't care, as the strut tubes were kinked and useless.

I've considered cutting a section out of the top of the housing just below the threads, and welding the threaded portion back. Then cutting the tube below the spindle, and welding in the section I cut out, or some other suitably sized piece of tubing. I have had success with sectioning the top part on my '68 style struts (success means the welds held), but haven't tried this with the later struts. or down low where the stresses have to be a lot greater.

I would imagine dropped spindles in Alaska may result in frostbite !!

Had time to read the search thread now . Perfect and thanks. I'll be setting up my drill press with an end mill in the next two weeks.
