1973 and body kits

I just bought a 1973 911 coupe that was a theft recovery from a local rebuildable company. Items stolen from this car include the wheels, glass and bumpers (the rest is intact). The engine is all there, but I don't know if it runs or not.

My question pertains to body kits. The body on this car is a little beaten, and since I got it dirt cheap, I figured I'd play with it a little. I have been looking at various websites that sell various body kits (wide bodies/turbo looks, etc.). It seems that most of the kits are stated to fit 74 and up vehicles, and mine is a 73. What are the major differences that prevent me from using these kits, and can I find kits that fit my body (where?)?

To be more specific, I kinda like the 993 Twin Turbo kit or the Flatnose Turbo S kit that I saw on the NR auto website- http://www.nrauto.com/

Well, one reason you don't see too many kits aimed at the pre-74 crowd is that the pre-74 bodies are considered by many to be the best looking 911 shell Porsche ever designed. Accordingly, they are less-frequent candidates for being 'played with a little.'

Look at some pictures of the 73 Carrera RS 2.7 and 74 RS 3.0 for an idea of the best way (in my opinion) to update your 73 body.

Contact Hank at GT Racing (http://www.gt-racing.com). They carry all the body parts for all years. The glass stuff on my 73' came from there...

Yeah, I agree with Jack - go for a 2.7 RS or RSR look instead (they can look pretty cool/mean). Otherwise you'll just end up with something that doesn't look quite right.

Jack's car looks amazing - manages to keep the classic looks with a more modern feel, IMO.

Jack and Hatari, those are some sweet looking cars. I noticed that you both had a similar type of flares on the rear. Do they make quarter panels with the flares already on them?

Although I like those body kits, if it would look "wrong" on mine, I certainly wouldn't want to do it. I just thoght since it was beat up pretty bad all over, I might as well do it.

Oh, that racing footage was great.

You could get SC quarters, but you're still going to have to cut (and weld) somewhere. A good bodyshop can weld on steel flares for you.
